The Pittsburgh Steelers are sold on Kenny Pickett. Despite his decent performance in the 2023-24 season where he threw for 2,070 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, Mike Tomlin has convinced the potential in him is enough to consider him a solid centerpiece around whom the team can build its offense.
As per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Kenny Pickett will be the focus around which Arthur Smith, the new offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers will center the schemes. The duo recently spent some time interacting in South Florida, a meeting that the coach dubbed as being “great.” For now, Pickett is off the hook for the disastrous state of affairs of the Steelers’ offense last season.
Offensive coordinator Matt Canada, who has since been let go is being cited as the reason for the team’s woes offensively. Does this mean that Kenny Pickett can remain assured there will be no competition at QB for him? No, Mason Rudolph could be re-signed and stay on as a backup option.
Kenny Pickett was limited to just 13 games as QB suffered an ankle injury keeping
Following Pickett’s struggles in the regular season, there were doubts about his future as the team’s starting quarterback. With these doubts surfaced rumors of the Steelers considering a trade for Justin Fields, or drafting a new quarterback in the draft this season. But the Steelers are limiting their focus to bringing on other offensive weapons such as wide receivers to help support Pickett.
The upcoming season will be Kenny Pickett’s best and final shot to prove that the Pittsburgh Steelers can rely upon him as their franchise quarterback. If he fails to perform yet again, with all the weapons on offense, it would mean the Steelers will need to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to move forward.
Recently, the team’s general manager Omar Khan expressed his faith in Pickett. He told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor:
I have full faith in Kenny. He's shown us some good things, and obviously there were some issues with the offense...Omar Khan said
Pickett was restricted by the offense around him last season, his ankle injury made things worse as he could not play more than 13 games in the season. This will be the year that Steelers fans will get to see Pickett unleash his true potential under a new offensive coordinator and an improved roster.
