San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk made a surprising appearance on Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center. The Sacramento Kings welcomed the Detroit Pistons and had a little fun before the game.
When the Pistons starters were announced, the Kings’ production team had the brilliant idea of trolling their opponents. On the giant screen, they played Aiyuk’s memorable 51-yard catch from last month’s NFC Championship game.
It was the same catch that bounced off Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor‘s facemask. Brock Purdy found Aiyuk inside the Lions’ red zone three plays later. It sparked a massive 17-point comeback from the 49ers to win 34-31. It also ended the chance for the city of Detroit to play in their first-ever Super Bowl.
Although the Kings aren’t based in San Francisco, they’re still an NBA team from California. Sacramento doesn’t have an NFL team, so being in the Bay Area, they also support the 49ers. Naturally, it makes sense that they would troll another sports team from Detroit. Yet they lost 133-120 against the Pistons, who have won just seven games all season (7-43).
Brandon Aiyuk’s contract situation with the San Francisco 49ers
The 2023 NFL season was a success for Brandon Aiyuk. After being drafted by the 49ers in 2020, the 25-year-old has grown by leaps and bounds. Aiyuk received a four-year, $12.5 million contract with the team, with a $6.6 million signing bonus. He is one of the least-earning players on the side.
After the Super Bowl concludes, the 49ers will soon have to turn their attention to renewing contracts. Aiyuk was one of the best players for the 49ers last season. In 16 games, he caught 75 passes for 1,342 receiving yards and scored seven touchdowns.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed that he has not heard any details surrounding the negotiations, but he believes it’s on the 49ers’ radar. Rapoport told Laura Britt of NBC Sports Bay Area,
This is who you should want to pay. Homegrown talent. You guys remember when he first got there? I wasn't sure this was going to work out. It didn't seem like [head coach] Kyle Shanahan was that thrilled. He has worked his way toward being one of the best receivers in the NFL.Ian Rapoport via NBC Sports Bay Area
Besides Aiyuk, pass rusher Chase Young would be another interesting individual to keep an eye on. The San Francisco 49ers acquired Young from Washington midway through the last season. Rapoport claimed that the 24-year-old could prove to be a good player for the team.
