Despite throwing several interceptions during training, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has faith in quarterback Brock Purdy. Why wouldn’t he be? The supposed alternative to him, Trey Lance, has failed to prove himself despite playing in the same system.

Last season, it became apparent that Purdy would become the starting signal-caller after Jimmy Garoppolo got injured just after a few games. They went unbeaten throughout the regular season and even reached the playoffs.

“It took only three games,” said Shanahan, according to Albert Breer of SI.com. “That was never going to change.” However, the 23-year-old’s season ended prematurely against the Philadelphia Eagles due to an elbow injury. Since then, he has been in rehab. Meanwhile, Garoppolo was traded to the Raiders, and Sam Darnold was signed as a secondary backup.

Meanwhile, the Iowa State graduate appeared shaky during the recent training camps. As per the Athletic, Purdy has thrown 10 interceptions in 197 training camp throws, including two on Wednesday. Furthermore, the last pick in the 2022 draft had a 5 percent interception rate during the two training camps.

Nevertheless, Shanahan wants to believe in Brock Purdy, despite the question marks over whether he can replicate last season’s wonders or if he is just a one-hit-wonder.

“There were so many questions about his [Brock Purdy] injury,” Kyle Shanahan said. “He’d come back from it. He was always clearly our starter.”

When Steve Young joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1987, he had the daunting task of replacing the legendary Joe Montana. After failed stints in Los Angeles and Tampa Bay, he was desperate to prove himself as the No. 1 pick in the draft. His chance finally came three years later, and he took it with both hands, winning the Super Bowl three times.

Brock Purdy, on the other hand, has been thrown into the lion’s den from the beginning and has proved every analyst and critic wrong by performing way beyond expectations. He doesn’t have the rocket arm that Young did, but the 61-year-old says Purdy is the “real deal.”

“Brock has limitations. Everyone does, at some level,” Young told the 49ers website. “But he does things that don’t expose it. He’s smart and understands the game in a unique way. He is the real deal.” He emphasized that Coach Shanahan has similar feelings about Brock Purdy because he can depend on him.
