49ers HC Kyle Shanahan knows Brock Purdy won’t be able to perform well if he gets a ‘big money’ contract, claims Nick Wright

Nick Wright credits the 49ers’ solid offensive weapons and Kyle Shanahan’s strategic play-calling as the reasons why Brock Purdy experienced a winning season.

There’s no doubt that Brock Purdy got himself out of the ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ narrative with his performances. In his first two seasons, Purdy led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance. He will receive a huge contract extension due to his stellar performances. Despite Purdy’s performance last season, the netizens still can’t over his ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ title as they continue to doubt his journey in the NFL.

Kansas City Chiefs fan Nick Wright refuses to acknowledge the importance of Purdy. Wright credited the solid offensive weapons and Shanahan’s strategic play-calling for the 49ers’ success. Moreover, he claimed Purdy would only find success as long as the offensive weapons remained with the 49ers.

Deep down, when he’s being honest, Kyle Shananah knows, what everyone knows — the moment Brock Purdy was to go from $1 million to $50 million and you have to pluck away a lot of those weapons and that roster, he’s not going to be able to carry.

The 49ers have offensive juggernauts like Deebo Samuels, Brandon Aiyuk, Christian McCaffrey, and George Kittle, to name a few. Purdy has definitely benefitted from their presence. Hence, if he receives a $40 million per season contract, all these offensive pieces might get traded to remain below the cap hit. Not everyone can get paid and remain on the team due to salary cap restrictions. Only recently did Kyle Juszczyk restructure his contract to save cap spaces.

Given the impact of Purdy within the franchise, 49ers CEO Jed York and head coach Kyle Shanahan have expressed an interest in offering the 24-year-old a massive contract extension. Unfortunately, analysts like Nick Wright believed it would affect the team. Moreover, he felt Purdy’s performance would deteriorate without pieces like Samuels, Kittle, and Aiyuk.

Nick Wright compared Kyle Shanahan with Mike McDaniel for their quarterback situations

Well, Purdy isn’t the only one whose potential contract extension received opposition from Wright. He also elaborated on the Miami Dolphins situation. He compared the Dolphins offering a lucrative extension to Tua Tagovailoa, which is similar to the situation the 49ers face. Hence, he believed Kyle Shanahan and Mike McDaniel remain in the same boat.

Just like Purdy, if Miami offered Tagovailoa a lucrative deal, they would lose their offensive edge due to the salary cap situation. In such a case, they would need to create space for the quarterbacks. That is only possible if they let go of prominent offensive players— believing their QBs can carry the team on their shoulders.

He argued that both the coaches stand basically at the same level with their good quarterbacks but brilliant offenses, which got them to the playoffs. The sportscaster believes the much-needed offensive talents in both teams make them Super Bowl contenders, not their quarterbacks
