During the 2021 NFL season, the Los Angeles Rams went all in and won the Super Bowl. The Rams GM Les Snead built a team by trading for already established players including their QB Matthew Stafford instead of depending on the draft. And now, they have to pay the price for it.
The next season after their Super Bowl run, the Rams went 5-12, and honestly it didn’t surprise a lot of people. Even the Rams knew they pushed all their chips to the table for that one championship. Now, they have to rip the band-aid off and start rebuilding their team. The Los Angeles-based franchise recently parted ways with their star linebacker Bobby Wagner to save cap space, despite his remarkable season.
Additionally, the franchise is also trying to trade their star defensive back Jalen Ramsey in hopes of getting a first-round draft pick. Ramsey might’ve been past his prime but he’s still a great cornerback and teams would be willing to give a first-round pick for the elite talent. Moreover, the Rams also recently allowed their wide receiver Allen Robinson to seek trade with other teams. So, they are clearly in rebuild mode.
Additionally, there were also several rumors, that the Rams are looking to trade their veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford and build a team around the 27-year old QB Baker Mayfield. However, general manager Les Snead has dismissed the idea of Stafford trade by claiming he is still a key player in their team.
Les Snead says the Rams are ‘remodeling’ and not tearing their house down
Ahead of the much anticipated free agency, the LA Rams GM Les Snead addressed the media about his team’s goals during the off-season. During the press conference, he revealed that the team is going to rely on the veteran QB Matthew Stafford in the 2023 season.
“I think we’re going to definitely rely on Matthew, he’s definitely one of our pillars,” Snead said. “He’s definitely someone we’re going to rely on, and someone we’re going to have to rely on as we do remodel this.”
“And the reason I said remodel and not rebuild is a player like Matthew Stafford,” said Snead. “To me, in a rebuild, you would just bulldoze the house down, and again rebuilding from the ground up. But when you have someone like Matthew Stafford, players like Cooper Kupp, Aaron Donald, there’s some weight-bearing walls there that we still have, and we’re going to rely on those — don’t want to put pressure on them — and then at point remodel around them with maybe different teammates, different partners.”
The Rams believe they have a chance to recreate their Super Bowl magic by retaining their core players, but with their cap space situation and lack of draft capital, it would be very tough to achieve that.
