Tensions are rising in the New York Giants camp. Saquon Barkley and the Giants failed to reach a long-term deal before the trade deadline on July 17, as they haven’t progressed anywhere in their contract negotiations. Amidst this situation, the New York-based football team is getting a lot of heat from many people, including the Fox Sports analyst LeSean McCoy for prioritizing QB Daniel Jones over their star running back.

During a recent episode of the Fox Sports show Speak, the former Buffalo Bills running back blasted the Giants QB as the quarterback signed his huge deal and Barkley got snubbed as a result. “Who is Daniel Jones, though?” McCoy started with a brutal rhetoric question. He further said, “Daniel Jones isn’t even a condo. He’s like a garage. You can rent a garage out. Are we really going to sit here and act like Daniel Jones is this superstar quarterback? You’re supposed to get better and better each year, right? I can’t even say he’s getting better each year.”

McCoy then went on to say that Jones is not even a superstar quarterback who can sell tickets. “You will never see Daniel Jones in any commercials. When a defense comes to play the Giants, you really think they’re talking about Daniel Jones?”

McCoy must’ve missed the Buffalo Wings commercial Jones appeared back in 2020. Nonetheless, Jones just had a breakout year where he led the Giants to their first playoff victory in the last decade.

As a result, the 26-year-old quarterback inked a massive 4-year contract extension with the Giants worth up to $160 million in the 2023 off-season. That contract made Jones one of the highest-paid players of all time. Since the Giants also splashed a lot of money on Jones’ contract, they couldn’t afford Barkley and placed him on a franchise tag.

The market for running backs is running very thin right now. The Giants placed their star running back Saquon Barkley on the franchise tag worth approximately $10 million for the 2023 season.

Barkley hasn’t signed the tag yet and is expected to miss out on the training sessions. But it is highly unlikely that he would sit out the entire 2023 season and miss out on the $10 million deal.

The last running back to sit out a season was the Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell, who did it back in 2018. That didn’t work out very well for Bell, as he later claimed that he regretted that decision.

Now, if Barkley ended up playing and registering a remarkable season, that could help him in his contract negotiations in the 2024 season. If he holds out, it would be a massive loss for both the Giants and Barkley.
