An arrest warrant has been issued for the Detroit Lions’ cornerback Cameron Sutton. It’s been about two weeks since the police of Florida have been searching for his alleged involvement in a domestic violence and battery case.
ESPN gathered the information from Phil Martello, a spokesperson for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, sharing that the Florida police have been unable to track or locate the cornerback since March 7, right after his arrest warrant was issued. The official news came from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, announcing that Sutton was wanted for a domestic violence and aggravated battery case.
The officials also shared the number of the car’s license plate that they believed the Lions’ CB was seen driving last. They also sought help from the public to locate Sutton.
It all began on March 7, when the police received a call quite early in the morning about a woman allegedly battered by Sutton, who later fled the scene of the crime– a house in Lutz. Police also found wounds and bruises on the woman’s body as evidence of the commission of the crime.
The 29-year-old came into the NFL in 2017 after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he played six seasons, before joining the Lions last Summer as an unrestricted free agent. In the 17 games he played for Detroit, he logged 60 total tackles, six passes defended, and one interception.
Lions’ strategy amidst the Cameron Sutton conundrum
With the arrest warrant for the cornerback and inability to locate him, the Lions’ struggle with the secondary would become more visible and apparent next season. The team already struggled with it last season and now as the odds of Sutton playing the 2024 season are next to impossible, the franchise has a major crisis at the moment.
The most feasible option for now is to bring Amik Robertson to the secondary along with Khalil Dorsey. The Lions brought them to ease up the current lagging situation for the position.
Moreover, for now, the franchise is focusing on solidifying the defensive line as they also inked DJ Reader in order to give their quarterbacks limited time to throw and also cover the back-end breakdown. This will also help strengthen their weaker secondary next season.
