“We don’t want to draft floaters”: Lions HC Dan Campbell wants only highly competitive players in his locker room

“We don’t want to draft floaters”: Lions HC Dan Campbell wants only highly competitive players in his locker room

The Detroit Lions are clearly in a rebuilding phase, the team has come to the last position in its division for the past four years, and they have not been to the playoffs since 2016. The team faced another setback this season as the NFL did not feature the franchise for a single primetime game which is humiliating for them.

However, the Lions may have a good year after all, or at least a better one. The team drafted defensive end, Aidan Hutchinson, out of Michigan this year, and the team has a great HC in Dan Campbell. He is trying to change the culture in the locker room and integrate a positive and competitive mentality within the players he has.

“We want guys that are highly competitive”: Dan Campbell

Dan Campbell wants only players who are committed to the Lions’ organization

The Detroit Lions have their rookie minicamp in progress and the team’s head coach Dan Campbell spoke about the performance of the rookies drafted in this year’s draft. He was vocal and did not hold anything back on the kind of players he wants on the team.

We are trying to avoid floaters, we don’t want to draft floaters. Floaters are a guy who gets here and just kind of, there he goes, he’s just in the open ocean. We want guys that are highly competitive and they love ball.” Campbell said at the Rookie minicamp press conference. “They’re not going to be perfect, they might not always say the right things, they mean well but they love ball. They’ll do anything for it and do anything for their teammates. In that regard, I’m elated with the guys that we have and the vision.”

The NFL was not elated with the fact that the Lions wasted no time in drafting Aidan Hutchinson in this year’s draft. Head coach Dan Campbell said that he was not concerned with that opinion and he wants to ensure that nobody else in the organization goes through the motions of “the whole dog-and-pony show,” that goes on in the first round of the NFL draft. Campbell has said that he wants a roster that is free of players who are not serious and loyal to one team.

The HC along with GM Brad Holmes has rebuilt the Lions since they arrived in the organization in 2021. They have a huge task at their disposal as the team is not in the best shape and condition, however, every small step counts.
