Mac Jones was on an island after reportedly having no communication with the New England Patriots coaching staff, and not showing any signs of improvement. Despite registering one of the best rookie quarterback seasons in the NFL, his progress is in reverse.
The tension reached such a point that Jones was demoted to third-string. He came to the team to be the next franchise quarterback, but little by little, the distance between him and Bill Belichick grew to unassailable lengths. They did not even notify him of his not being active for the final game of the 2023 NFL season.

Insiders told MassLive that Mac Jones put in the extra effort. He would arrive at the training facility before anyone else. Stay and lift the most in the gym. Leave after everyone has left. Yet this did little to mend the almost-broken relationship with the coaches.
There’s doubt whether the Alabama graduate will be at Foxborough next season, but that hasn’t diminished the workaholic inside him. A video surfaced on social media showing Jones hard at practice, dodging, doing step-overs, and even completing an accurate no-look pass.
Mac Jones’ trade rumors
Belichick is no longer part of the Patriots setup after more than two decades of serving and winning six Super Bowls. Jared Mayo replaced the veteran as the Patriots’ next head coach.
Soon after taking over, Mayo announced that they would be using their third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to pick the best player at a certain position.

It’s not wrong to assume that Mayo will target a quarterback, considering that particular position is loaded this year. With several high-profile names like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels trying out their luck, no one will be surprised if the Patriots eye them.
As per The Athletic‘s Chad Graff and Jed Howe, the Patriots will more than likely trade Mac Jones, which will be a “mutually beneficial move” for both parties. However, his value has gone down significantly over the last couple of years. So finding a trade partner will be difficult.
Perhaps a similar deal with Trey Lance might help the Patriots move Jones on. And if they don’t draft a QB, there are several experienced players whose contracts are expiring soon. For example, if the Vikings don’t renew Kirk Cousins‘ deal, then he could be a very good option for the Patriots, along with someone like Justin Fields.
