New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had to face coach Bill Belichick’s wrath in a Patriots-Packers joint practice this week. Jones acknowledged that incident after practice and took full responsibility for the ‘offensive miscommunication’.
Jones said Belichick wanted the offense to score during a two-minute drill and was not happy when Jones and the offense failed to do so. He ordered them to do it again. “So, we scored on the two-minute drive with a field goal, and then we just wanted to try a situation again,” Jones told the media after practice. “We just kind of redid the situation, I guess. That was fun, I guess, but it was my fault. I think it was just a miscommunication between all of us.”
Jones hasn’t been named as the starting QB for the Patriots yet. He might be ahead of Bailey Zappe in the pecking order, but it seems like Belichick still needs time to be absolutely sure about Jones. Getting chewed out by the coach won’t help Jones at all.
Jones was drafted by the Patriots in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He led them to the playoffs in his rookie season and earned Pro Bowl honors. He was the runner-up to Ja’Marr Chase in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. The Patriots play their remaining preseason games against the Green Bay Packers and the Tennessee Titans. They will play the defending NFC Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in their season opener on September 10.
Mac Jones and the Patriots have a great joint practice against the Green Bay Packers
Mac Jones has faced a lot of scrutiny since being drafted 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Patriots, once a dynasty, are now dangling in mediocrity. Jones is supposed to be the QB who will bring the Patriots’ glory days back.
Jones had a good rookie season but had a lackluster last year. There are questions about his ability to lead his team back to the playoffs after last season. Head coach Bill Belichick hasn’t named him the starting quarterback yet for the 2023 season.
However, Jones and the Patriots are trending in the right direction. They reportedly had a great joint practice against the Green Bay Packers. Jones and the Patriots’ offense had their best day of practice and will hope to carry that into the 2023 NFL season. They open their season against the Philadelphia Eagles on 10th September at the Gillette Stadium.
