Bill Belichick is widely regarded as the greatest coach of all time.

The New England Patriots were Super Bowl favorites almost every year under HC Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady. That all changed when Brady left New England and joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020. The three years following that switch have been the worst years of Belichick’s coaching tenure with the Pats so far. They have only made the playoffs once since 2020 and have started the 2023 season 1-3.
Belichick has come under a lot of criticism for his lack of success without Brady. Former defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys and current ESPN NFL analyst Marcus Spears feels that Belichick’s time might be over as he has struggled to adapt to changes in the league. While appearing on the ESPN show Get Up Spears talked about Belichick and the Patriots.
“It’s fine to say Bill Belichick had one of the greatest runs and he may be one of the greatest coaches, or is the greatest coach to ever coach in the NFL. It’s gone. He’s not anymore,” Spears said on the show. “This offense right here, this is throwback dude. And nobody in the NFL is worried about [it]. I am not talking about Mac [Jones], I ain’t talking about Bill [Belichick] or Bill O’Brien I am talking about scheme. Period.”
The Pats were blown away by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday 38-3. It was the biggest loss for the Pats under Belichick as the team has struggled to score points throughout the season. They will play the New Orleans Saints in their next game on Sunday and will hope to bounce back against them.
Former NFL QB slams Bill Belichick for mishandling QB Mac Jones
The New England Patriots haven’t had a great start to their season. QB Mac Jones and the offense has struggled to put up points on the board and former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III blames the coaching for the team’s struggles.
“For me, this comes down to coaching,” Griffin said. “In Year Two, Bill Belichick messed up his young quarterback. When you give him a defensive coordinator and a special teams coordinator as his offensive coordinator and he’s on his third coordinator in three years in the NFL, that is the epitome of coaching malpractice.”
The Patriots have been one of the worst offenses this season. They lost their recent game against the Dallas Cowboys by 35 points and have slipped to a 1-3 start. They will hope to get a win in their next game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
