“Not a fluke,” Marcus Spears urges the Seahawks to stick with Geno Smith as starting QB after successful season

The Seattle Seahawks made the playoffs last season despite being considered one of the weakest teams in the NFL before the season. They finished second in the NFC West division with a winning record largely because of their quarterback Geno Smith.

After the departure of franchise legend, Russell Wilson, the Seahawks had a big decision to make regarding who would take up his position. They finally decided to hand the position to Smith, whose last starter role came way back in 2014.

Smith had an underwhelming season in 2014 with the Jets as he led to them to a 3-10 record with an appalling personal record. Smith only completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his only starter role so far.

Cut to 2022/23, Smith had a major turnaround and impressed everyone with his quarterback skills keeping including NFL analyst, Marcus Spears. The former defensive end complimented Smith on his performance throughout the season and urged the Seahawks to continue with him for the upcoming season.

“I think they should re-sign and get to a long term deal with Geno. I don’t think last year was a fluke,” said Spears on Smith’s chances with the Seahawks next season. He further went onto claim that unless a player impresses them greatly from the NFL draft, Smith should be the undoubted starter at the franchise when the new season starts.

If the Seahawks are serious about keeping Geno Smith, they need to start negotiating as early as possible, especially given the recent circumstances. Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Dave Canales left the franchise to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and reports have claimed that he could well take Geno Smith with him to fill up the void left by Tom Brady.

The Seahawks have started working on a contract with Smith recently and are confident that the player will resign despite being a free agent. General manager, John Schneider also have a heads up regarding the positive talks between him and Geno Smith in recent weeks.
