The Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has caused a lot of stir in the media by trading for former San Francisco 49ers’ first-round pick Trey Lance. He did so without consulting either the head coach Mike McCarthy or the starting quarterback Dak Prescott. A lot of analysts are calling it a risky move and have concerns over the trade.

One such analyst is Mark Schlereth of Fox Sports. He ripped into the Cowboys and Jones on his podcast Stinkin Truth. He suggested that the Cowboys won’t win anything if they keep this approach. Lance was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and will put a lot of pressure on Prescott to perform. There is enough of that on him already.

“This is why the Cowboys will never win s—, because Jerry Jones can’t help himself,” Schlereth said on the latest episode of the podcast. He further continued by saying, “You think about Jerry Jones, you’re gonna go out there and you’re gonna make a trade for a guy without talking to anybody else in your organization, Stephen Jones, your head coach Mike McCarthy, your quarterback.”

He suggested that the Cowboys would win games in the regular season but would fail in the postseason. “They’ll get in the playoffs, and they’ll s— in their helmets like they do every year.” The Cowboys lost in the Divisional Round of the playoffs last year against the Niners.

Prescott had a poor 2022 season. He led the league in interceptions with 15 and is under pressure to deliver this season. That pressure has now heightened with the arrival of Lance. The Cowboys will hope that Prescott delivers and they make a deep playoff run. Their season begins against the New York Giants on September 10 at the MetLife Stadium.

Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys last month. The former third overall pick had a rough two years with the San Francisco 49ers and after a poor preseason this year, the Niners traded him to the Cowboys. Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys did so without consulting his starting QB or the HC Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy, though, is impressed by Lance’s work ethic in the short he has been a Cowboy. While talking to the media on Thursday, McCarthy said, “Very hard working, we have a quarterback meeting room area. He’s pretty much kind of taken it over. The grease boards look like ‘[A] Beautiful Mind.’ …We just need to work on the extra things, particularly in the area of footwork.”

Lance will back up starting QB Dak Prescott this season and will hope to learn as much as he can from his veteran teammate. Prescott is expected to have a bounce-back year from last year and with Lance as his backup, he will be under pressure to deliver. The Cowboys take on the New York Giants in week 1.
