The NFL preseason games are off the books. The league is just days away from the kickoff of the 2023 regular season. However, before the start of the regular season, all 32 teams have to make some tough decisions in the process of getting their squad trimmed down to just 53 men. Teams would’ve to cut a lot of players before Tuesday. Amidst this, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling advocates for roster expansion in the league.
“NFL make the roster like 58 or something. We got too many dawgs in the WR room to not be on the team,” the Chiefs pass-catcher wrote on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter.
The league might expand team rosters in the future if the owners approve, but it’s a long process. Right now, teams have no choice but to cut some of their players before the deadline on Tuesday.
As of now, the Chiefs have more than 90 players on their rosters, and they have to trim it down to just 53 before Tuesday. Andy Reid and his coaching staff have to drop nearly 40 players from the squad. Some of the casualties will be from the wide receivers room.
Most of them would return to practice squads, but for some of them, that would be the end of their NFL dreams. So, MVS suggests that the league should increase the rosters and allow teams to have at least 58 athletes on their roster.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling looks to become the Chiefs’ No.1 receiver
After Tyreek Hill left the Chiefs in the 2022 off-season, the Kansas City-based football team roped in JuJu Smith-Schuster to fill his role. JuJu didn’t play at Tyreek’s level, but he still had a solid season.
However, in the 2023 off-season, JuJu left the Chiefs and signed a new deal with the New England Patriots. Now, the Chiefs are again back to square one, trying to find their number one receiver.
The Chiefs have Kadarius Toney, Sky Moore, Justin Watson, and Rashee Rice on their roster, along with MVS. Valdes-Scantling can’t replace Hill’s boots, but he is looking to become the number 1 wide receiver for the Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
MVS was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After a 4-year stint with the Packers, the talented pass catcher signed with the Chiefs in the 2022 off-season and has been a solid addition to the squad.
