“Wasn’t excited from a competitive standpoint,” HC Matt LaFleur isn’t looking forward to face QB Baker Mayfield for the Packers-Rams game on MNF
Matt LaFleur/Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield has had a roller-coaster of a season this year. The QB was traded to the Panthers from the Browns and after a terrible performance in Carolina, the 2018 NFL draft first overall pick was released mid-season and was left without the team.
The Rams then came in and signed the 27-year-old free agent off waiver as their starting QB Matthew Stafford was injured and they were struggling in the QB department. Mayfield was brought into the team to provide the much-needed stability as the defending champions were going through a terrible season.
The MNF fixture between the Rams and Packers will be an interesting one as two known associates will face off against each other. Packers HC Matt LaFleur and Rams HC Sean McVay speak to each other regularly as they have developed a close friendship from early on in their careers.
When LaFleur was asked about the Rams signing Mayfield, he wasn’t thrilled about the decision, however; he was quick to recognize his game-winning drive against the Raiders.
“I can’t say I was real excited from a competitive standpoint,” LaFleur said during a videoconference with Rams reporters. “I don’t think there’s too many guys that could have done that, I mean it’s pretty remarkable. … Shoot, some of the throws he made on that last drive were pretty spectacular.”
Baker Mayfield surprised everyone with his performance against the Raiders
Baker Mayfield signing for the Rams was criticized by almost everyone as the 27-year-old QB had the worst QB stats in the league. The Rams QB was a complete disappointment in his previous team and nothing was expected of him.
Maybe that’s all the motivation he needed to turn it around as Mayfield orchestrated not one but two game-winning drives late in the 4th quarter against the Raiders last week.
It was his first start in the Rams jersey, and the QB did a splendid job at it. Mayfield helped his team end their six-game losing streak and turned the tide on their season.
The Packers-Rams game will be an interesting matchup. Both teams have looked shaky this season and they will use this opportunity to gain an advantage over the other. Baker Mayfield going up against a veteran like Aaron Rodgers makes it one of the most exciting match-ups of the week.
