“He’s got to clean up everything around him”: Green Bay Packers HC Matt LaFleur gives QB Jordan Love a HARSH reality check
Jordan Love and Matt LaFleur
The Green Bay Packers have one of the most talented and greatest quarterbacks of all time in Aaron Rodgers, if you leave the Super Bowl stats and playoff stats aside, he has an amazing regular season record, with all those MVP awards and clutch throws. The quarterback has been confused and has been confusing fans as well because one day he indicates that he wants to play in the NFL and the next he hints at retiring. The Packers understood this and to be on the safer side, drafted a quarterback in the NFL draft last year.
Jordan Love was the Packers’ first-round pick in the NFL draft and the quarterback expected to become the next face of the franchise as Aaron Rodgers at that point seemed to be done with the league or at least the Packers but we know how things turned out. Love knows he had some huge shoes to fill but to date, he has barely gotten an opportunity to do so. This preseason HC Matt LaFleur decided to give Love the chance he has been looking for.
Jordan Love had a disappointing debut for the Green Bay Packers:
Jordan Love started the game for the Packers against the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, the quarterback lost his first preseason game 28-21 and ended the game with three straight turnovers. That is not a good look for any QB but you have to consider that two of these plays were not entirely on Love, the wideouts messed the plays to an extent. Following the game, HC Matt LaFleur spoke on his young QB’s performance.
“I think two of those you can totally take off him, the third one, we had two busted routes because the ball really shouldn’t have gone there on that play, but he had nowhere else to go with the football, and he forced it in there and the defender made a good play. We’ve just got to clean up everything around him,” LaFleur stated. The first two plays had the ball bounce off the wideout’s hands and then were intercepted as a result of that, the third play was not executed well as per the HC which led to a turnover.
LaFleur stated the reality of the situation that Jordan Love is in right now, in the NFL, if a team finds success, it is because of the QB and if they lose it is because of the QB as well. “We say it all the time about quarterbacks, they’re going to get too much credit when we do well and they’re going to get a lot of the blame when we don’t, and that’s just the reality of playing that position in this league, I was pleased with Jordan’s performance,” he concluded.
That game was far from an ideal one but it is still the preseason and Green Bay does have a lot of gaps that they need to fill in their receiver core, Love can improve and develop his game through these games. He will not get as much playing time during the regular season but this time should be enough to give him an idea of what skills he will need to work on.
