Matthew Stafford’s honeymoon phase with the Los Angeles Rams has reportedly come to an end. The Rams’ management has become increasingly frustrated with the 35-year-old, who is not willing to reconsider his current contract with the franchise which will run out in 2026.
The Rams signed Stafford in 2021 courtesy of a trade with the Detroit Lions. He made an instant impact on his arrival delivering top-notch performances throughout the 2021/22 season, eventually leading the Rams to their second Super Bowl title.
After winning the Super Bowl title, Stafford also benefitted personally as he earned himself a four-year contract extension worth a whopping $160 million in March 2022. The terms of the contract were extremely fruitful for the quarterback, as it included a guaranteed pay of $63 million in the first year followed by a $57 million in the second year.
Matthew Stafford had a disappointing season in 2022

The overall No.1 pick in the 2009 NFL draft is all set to earn a sensational $130 million as guaranteed pay through the contract extension, as per Spotrac. However, ever since Stafford signed the contract extension, he has failed to produce goods for the Rams as their starting quarterback, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed at all. The veteran suffered an elbow injury during the 2022 offseason and only started 9 games in the regular season due to constant struggles with injuries.
Leading NFL analyst, Colin Cowherd claimed that the Rams want to restructure the contract, but those efforts have been negated by the quarterback. Stafford has given a cold shoulder to these requests from the franchise.
“I was told by a source I trust that they wanted to redo his contract. He wasn’t interested. It limits what they can do and they were frustrated with him. I could also see them next year taking a quarterback because the way to catch up in this league with personnel is a rookie quarterback. Go buy four good players,” Cowherd told USA Today.
The Rams’ Super Bowl defense did not go to plan last season as they failed to qualify for the playoffs, finishing third in the NFC West division with an underwhelming 5-12 record. The situation might worsen for the franchise if Matthew Stafford fails to deliver impactful performances for a second consecutive season.
