The Miami Hurricanes, in all senses, blew the game when they faced the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets last night in college football. Not only did they lose a high-voltage match, it also ended their streak of four straight wins.

Late in the fourth quarter, it was clear that Miami would record their fifth win of the season. They were leading by 3 points, and if they had just kneeled the play to run down the clock, they would have gotten the W.

Instead, they chose the opposite. Hurricanes ran the ball, and what seemed to be a game-winning play turned into a disaster. Running back Donald Chaney Jr. fumbled the ball, and Georgia recovered it.

With just 30 seconds left on the clock, Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King then threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Christian Leary to steal the game from under the visitor’s nose. Georgia stunned the audience as they beat the Miami Hurricanes 23-20 on Saturday night.

Social media says Miami Hurricanes should have kneeled to win against Georgia Tech

After the game, frustrated fans took to Twitter to vent their disappointment that the Miami Hurricanes did not opt to kneel. The funny part is that even the commentators were not expecting the home side to go for a direct approach.

A keen observer of statistics and a self-proclaimed Georgia fan commented on X (formerly Twitter) that perhaps Miami was probably trying to help Leary cross his first 100 yards in one game threshold. He did end up achieving his personal feat, but at what cost?

The Georgia Tech head coach, Brent Key, said after the game, “We kind of thought they were taking a knee.” Fortunately for him, luck was in his team’s favor this time. Chaney Jr.’s fumble was close to being challenged by the Hurricanes. According to them, Chaney’s elbow hit the turf before the ball slipped out of his hands. But the referee dismissed the claim, and the drive switched hands.
