Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons joined a long list of stars to raise their voice on the pay disparity, that has come to light in the National Football League recently. The 24-year-old joined the bandwagon that players should be paid according to their production capacity only without considering the position they play in.

Parsons used the example of the Kansas City Chiefs‘ high-profile tight end Travis Kelce, to highlight the fact that positions should not determine financial gains. He argued that Kelce should be awarded a contract similar to a wide receiver, given the impact he has had on the franchise, especially during their dream run to the Super Bowl championships.

Parsons replied to a fan on his official Twitter account: “Facts. I think Travis Kelce should be paid as a receiver!! He has had more production than 75% of the receivers ahead of him! So many more players I can think of!! I don’t think a players value should be looked upon by position but by what they bring to a team! Including RB’s!!”

Travis Kelce himself acknowledged last month in an interview that his current contract makes him among the underpaid players in the NFL. “My managers and agents love to tell me how underpaid I am,” Kelce revealed during his interaction with Vanity Fair. “Any time I talk about wanting more money, they’re just like, ‘Why don’t you go to the Chiefs and ask them?’”

The 33-year-old is arguably the best tight end in the National Football League at the moment and is currently bound to a four-year contract extension, worth $57 million that he signed in 2020. According to his contract, Kelce pockets a little over $14m in salary on average, a number that is substantially lower than what a top-quality wide receiver earns in the NFL market.

Kelce’s former teammate, Tyreek Hill received a whopping contract from the Miami Dolphins in 2022. The wide receiver bagged a four-year contract worth a whopping $120 million, which included a guaranteed pay of $72.2 million. Kelce was arguably the Chiefs’ second most important player behind quarterback Patrick Mahomes last season, but in financial terms, he is only the fifth highest-paid in the franchise.

As the debate surrounding pay disparity gains more voice, one would hope that Micah Parsons’ wish comes true and footballers actually receive what they deserve, solely measured on their personal ability and impactfulness.
