“It’s American history,” Cincinnati Bengals safety Michael Thomas speaks up against Afro-Americans’ oppression on Juneteenth

Even before the United States of America gained freedom from the colonial rule, the issue of treating the African Americans right plagued the country. The blacks had to endure racial discrimination due to their skin colour, and were often used as slaves by the fairer skin in earlier days.

However, this brutal act of severe oppression thankfully did not last long, and on June 19, 1865 the order was passed proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. Juneteenth is celebrated all over America to commemorate the emancipation of African Americans in the country.

Cincinnati Bengals safety, Michael Thomas was invited in 2021, as part of the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative to create a video tour around Texas, to make people aware of what the Juneteenth is actually all about. The 32-year old roamed the streets of the historical venues and learnt more about the past, while speaking with local historians in Galveston where the order was passed by a Union Army General way back in 1865.

Michael Thomas in his interaction with the official Twitter handle of the NFL, explained why the general public in the United States and all over the world should be made aware of this particular piece of history. He urged everyone to educate themselves while he himself claimed that he had a lot to learn about the holiday himself and the visit to Galveston helped him a great deal.

Michael Thomas said, “This isn’t just black history. It’s American history. We don’t have to go somewhere else to try and learn about ‘something that happened… No, this happened in America to a group that has historically been systemically oppressed. It’s not a theory, it’s something that really happened, and when we can educate ourselves on that, we can not only learn history but learn empathy.”
