Mike McDaniel was dealt with the biggest loss of his career as the 39-year-old lost the first playoff game of his coaching career. The Dolphins were clear underdogs going into the game and did their best to upset the Bills on their turf.

The NFL wild-card playoff game was going in the favor of the visitors until the last moment when clear miscommunication from McDaniel led to a delay of game penalty and everything started to go downhill for the Dolphins.

Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson was trying to push his team further yards with just 4 minutes left on the clock to get a tie and force the exhilarating game into OT. The Dolphins’ offense was at the 48-yard line and Salvon Ahmed ran the ball down the field. However, he didn’t gain any yards.

The Dolphins were then waiting for a play from the HC. However, it arrived a bit late, and the clock had already snapped until then, resulting in a delay of time penalty. This changed the momentum of the game as the next pass by Thompson was incomplete and the Bills ended the game with their possession.

The Dolphins HC was criticized a lot for his abysmal play-calling and was asked to address it in the post-game press conference. McDaniels blamed the miscommunication between him and the line of scrimmage to be the reason for the delay in time penalty.

“There was some crowd noise that had to do with mishearing some digits of the wristband,” McDaniel said after the game. “There was some issues within the huddle of communication and getting to the line of scrimmage”

The Dolphins gave the Bills a tough competition, and it even looked like the win would go Miami’s way. However, Dolphins lacked evidence when trying to navigate playoff games and it was pretty evident.

Mike McDaniel probably succumbed to the pressure and chaos which led to small mistakes by the Dolphins that eventually cost them the game. However, the young HC is eager to learn and stated that he and the team will get better by the next season rolls around, assuming McDaniel will still have a job by then.

“That’s all the stuff that you do in this business, is you never stop finding the things that you can improve on and it was a piece of the reason why we were unable to come out with a victory, but it definitely wasn’t the only reason,” Mike McDaniel stated in the post-game presser. “There was a lot of people who can find several things that they could do better including myself which we will do pressing forward.”

The Dolphins have the rest of the postseason to improve on their mistakes. On the other hand, the Bills are one step closer to the infamous Super Bowl.
