“It is a significant game,” Mike Tomlin hands out ultimatum to Kenny Pickett and Mitchell Trubisky ahead of Steelers’ final pre-season fixture
Mike Tomlin to decide on starting QB between Kenny Pickett and Mitch Tubisky
As the Pittsburgh Steelers get ready to play their first season without Big Ben Roethlisberger under centre in nearly two decades. Roethlisberger retired last season after 18 seasons as QB for the Steelers and filling his shoes would be quite a task for whoever coach Mike Tomlin decides to hand over the reins for this season. The two men in the fray are Steelers’ first-round draft pick rookie Kenny Pickett and veteran Mitchell Trubisky.
All pre-season long there have been speculations regarding who will be chosen to lead the charge. Ben Roethlisberger who led the Steelers to 2 Super Bowl wins will be hard to replace but Pickett and Trubisky will try their best to have that opportunity. A difficult decision lies ahead of Head Coach Mike Tomlin as both Pickett and Trubisky make a strong case for themselves. Tomlin says he will make a final decision when the Steelers face Detroit Lions at home on Sunday.
Mike Tomlin-“This is a significant game for a lot of people.”
Mike Tomlin was asked questions regarding this major decision and who he believes will be the starting Quarterback come week 1-“A lot of spots are going to come down to this work. This work is weighted differently, and appropriately so. The in-stadium work is significant, and increasingly so with the more stadium exposure, you get. So make no mistake, this is a significant game[Steelers final pre-season game] for a lot of people.”
Pickett and Trubisky are the frontrunners but there is a 3rd player in the fray, the man who’s been there the longest Mason Rudolph seems to have fallen out of favour as he currently starts on the 3rd team.
Trubisky was the starter for the Steelers in the first two preseason games. In total, he had 9 of 15 completions for 123 yards with one touchdown and was sacked one time. Similarly, in these two games, Pickett went 19 of 22 completions for 171 yards with TDs and was sacked twice.
Pickett isn’t worried about Tomlin’s decision-“I go out there and play, that’s it, I don’t about it. I’m a football player. Whatever number they have me as I don’t care. I’m going to go out there and play every single time as hard as I can.”
