The New England Patriots registered their second losing season in three years which didn’t happen even a single time during the Tom Brady era. The offense was a mess last season with offensive line coach Matt Patricia calling the plays. Thankfully, the Patriots hired a real offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien during the offseason.

Quarterback Mac Jones didn’t look like much of a leader last season as he went 6-8 in the 14 games he started. Jones’ poor performance can also be attributed to the lack of offensive weapons he had in 2022. The receiving corp was in shambles without a star wideout on the roster. However, New England did sign JuJu Smith-Schuster to the team and is coming off a Super Bowl victory.

The Patriots hold the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft and experts believe the once-AFC powerhouse will draft wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with that selection. ESPN writer Mina Kimes thinks the team should scoop Smith-Njigba up because he gives off a Julian Edelman vibe. “A player that I particularly love for them [Patriots]… a guy that I really like – Jaxon Smith-Njigba out of Ohio State,” Kimes said. “Maybe because he reminds me a little bit of Julian Edelman to be honest. He’s got the route running, the hands. He gets tough yards after the catch. It’s just easy for him to imagine him sliding right away into a Bill O’Brien offense.”

Julian Edelman was a great selection for the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft. Edelman and Brady were one of the greatest QB-WR pairs and won championships for the Patriots. Smith-Njiba has all the skills and more than Edelman possessed and having him on the offense will be a great addition.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s parents are Maada Njigba and Jami Smith and he had a great Combine performance despite missing out on the 2022 season due to an injury. There were some concerns when he refused to run the 40-yard dash but he compensated for that with his explosive performance as he showcased his playmaking ability and catching skills. The Patriots did have a chat with him in Indianapolis which he later confirmed during his press conference.

“Coach Bill Belichick, you know what type of franchise program they have over there,” Smith-Njigba said. “Definitely would be awesome being in that system. Mac Jones also a great arm talent, great quarterback. Definitely would like playing there.”

The 21-year-old is already a superstar in college football. The Ohio State wideout holds the FBS Bowl game record for most receiving yards in a single game with 347 during the 2022 Rose Bowl. During the 2021 season, he had 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and 9 touchdowns. He missed out on playing in his junior year due to a hamstring injury.

Nevertheless, Smith-Njigba is one of the best playmakers in the 2023 draft and the Patriots should think about signing him on the roster. With the addition of Smith-Schuster and Smith-Njigba, Mac Jones has a shot at a comeback in the coming season. Let’s see if coach Belichick signs or passes up on Jaxon.
