Robbery in the NFL Honors? After months and months of debate, the league has finally announced the winners of the NFL Honors Awards. And in one of the most puzzling moves, the Cleveland Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett won the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award over the Pittsburgh Steelers OLB T.J. Watt and the Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons.
Pass rushers Garrett, Parsons, T.J. Watt, Maxx Crosby, and cornerback DaRon Bland were the five finalists for the 2023 DPOY award. However, the competition was between Garrett and T.J. Watt. In the end, the Browns pass rusher edged Watt to bag the hardware despite underperforming in the 2023 regular season.
Watt and even Micah Parsons had better numbers in many pass-rushing statistics. Watt registered a league-high 19 sacks, compared to Garrett’s 14 sacks. This is the third time in Watt’s career he led the league in sacks. Furthermore, Watt also registered league-high QB hits with 36, compared to Garrett’s 30. Besides, Watt registered 19 tackles for loss, 68 tackles, 1 interception, and 1 defensive touchdown.
Garrett did not register an interception or a defensive touchdown and only had 42 tackles. So, in almost every way, Watt had a better campaign than Garrett, but still, it wasn’t enough. However, Garrett’s impact on the Browns cannot be overlooked.
He helped the Browns reach the playoffs despite playing with 5 different quarterbacks due to injuries. They got humiliated in their playoff game by the Houston Texans, led by a rookie quarterback. Still, reaching playoffs was a big thing for the Browns, who didn’t have stability in the QB position. Garrett is the only active player in the league, who has registered 10 or more sacks in the last six seasons.
Social media reacts to Myles Garrett winning DPOY over T.J. Watt
NFL fans on social media couldn’t believe the Browns pass rusher won the Defensive Player of the Year award over the Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt. The Steelers OLB led the league in sacks and had better numbers than Garrett.
Furthermore, some fans were also mad that the Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby didn’t even get a single first-place vote from AP voters. Check out some of the reactions attached below.
Nonetheless, the Browns pass rusher now finally has won a major award, which is very important for his HOF resume. On the other hand, fans believe T.J. Watt losing the award is one of the biggest snubs in the last decade.
