By now, the entire football world knows that running backs are not satisfied with what they are being paid. It’s common knowledge that RBs tend to get paid less than positions like quarterback or wide receiver. But this is the first time the players themselves have banded together to find a solution. Just a day after the New York Giants gave Saquon Barkley an extension, Pittsburgh Steelers’ Najee Harris has voiced his frustration with the devaluation of the running back position.

Harris has been a regular feature for the Steelers since his first-round draft pick in 2021. In his rookie season, he rushed for 1200 yards and scored seven touchdowns. During that time, he was asked to perform multiple roles in games when it was needed. Harris revealed that almost everyone in his position does it.“The game’s going to rely on you. You need to do this for the team,” the 25-year-old said. “It happens in places like Cleveland, Tennessee, even the 9ers.”

However, he revealed that when it’s time to pay, they start making excuses. “The position (running back) is devalued when it’s time to pay.  They just don’t want to pay,” the 2021 Pro Bowl award winner said. Najee Harris then brought up Saquon Barkley’s example. “Saquon accumulated for almost 30% of the offense,” he told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “He’s (Barkley) not trying to break the market. He’s trying to get compensated for what he thinks is fair.”

Harris is concerned that the devaluation will lead to less security for the players. He believes that if they don’t come up with a solution soon, future generations will have it even harder.

Harris was the 24th overall pick in the 2021 draft. The former Alabama State running back signed for four years at $13.1 million, fully guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter. He was the first RB to be drafted that year.

While at Alabama, Najee Harris created and broke several records. He helped the Crimson Tide win the College Football Playoff national title in his final season. For his heroics, they awarded him the All-American and Doak Walker Awards for being the best running back in the country.

During his four-year stay at Alabama, Najee Harris played 51 games and rushed for 3,843 yards and 46 touchdowns. He will be entering his third year as a Steeler and would hope that he does not end up in the same boat as Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs.
