It’s hard to establish any connection between Patrick Mahomes and NBA stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Joel Embiid. But Nick Wright alleged that the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback had a big influence on both Towns and Embiid’s impressive performances on Monday night.

Let’s focus first on Embiid. The Philadelphia 76ers man had a record-breaking 70 points, beating the San Antonio Spurs 133-123. But the eye-catching statistic was the 18 rebounds, a career-best for the 29-year-old power forward. Not only that, he had 24 field goals from 41, along with 21 out of 23 free throws, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain‘s score of 68. A number that had been left untouched since 1967.

Now on to Anthony Towns, who nearly upstaged Embiid if he had led the Minnesota Timberwolves to a win. Towns put up a career-high 62 points, dropping 44 in the first half alone.

This all happened a day after the Kansas City Chiefs‘ divisional playoff win in Buffalo. Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 27-24 win over the Buffalo Bills with a little help from a missed field goal. The 28-year-old threw 17 completions for 215 yards and two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce.

Somehow, Nick Wright made the connection that Mahomes had a big part in both Embiid and Towns’ outings. Well, he didn’t exactly take their names but generalized that the entire NBA was influenced by the six-time Pro Bowler beating the Bills.

Wow, man. Mahomes inspired the whole damn NBA last night. Truly transcendent performance.

Both basketball players—Embiid and Towns—were on top of their game. Wright overlooked one very significant historical detail. Instead of taking Mahomes’ name, his argument would have sounded more plausible if it were Kobe Bryant. Why? 22 January is the date when the Lakers legend dropped 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.

Wright’s audacious claim about Mahomes

By now, those who follow pro football are aware that Nick Wright loves the Chiefs and is a massive admirer of Patrick Mahomes. If someone did not know, his claim that the two-time Super Bowler influenced the entire NBA should be proof enough.

If that’s not enough to convince a few, here’s another example of why. During the latest episode of First Things First, Wright claimed that the Chiefs’ divisional round over the Bills proved that they have been better than the Bills since they drafted Mahomes.

Am I the only person who remembers how Patrick [Mahomes] became a Kansas City Chief? Because it was Buffalo. And everyone has acted like, 'Oh, it worked out for everyone.' The next year, the Bills got Josh Allen. Spoiler alert, guys; it didn't work out at all for everyone. It worked out amazingly for the Chiefs.

His words do have truth in them. Mahomes will be playing his sixth consecutive AFC Championship game, while the Bills have only reached the stage once since the early 1990s. That doesn’t mean they haven’t had success. Since adding Josh Allen, they have won four straight AFC East titles, including the 2023 season.
