“He doesn’t have to be Tyreek”: Patrick Mahomes advises Mecole Hardman to continue being himself instead of imitating Tyreek Hill

Mecole Hardman and Patrick Mahomes

Chiefs fans were not pleased after realizing that the fantastic duo of Patrick and Tyreek Hill will no longer torture NFL defenses as the Kansas City-based franchise agreed to send Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

This came as a huge blow to the franchise as Patrick Mahomes and Tyreek Hill created a lot of problems for the opposing teams. Hill played two seasons in the league with Alex Smith as his quarterback but really took off when Mahomes began throwing him the ball.

However, coach Andy Reid and star QB Patrick Mahomes are confident that the team has players who can churn out similar performances. The team has added JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling but the Chiefs will need Mecole Hardman to come into his own in the coming season.

In the three seasons with the Chiefs, Hardman has churned out 1,791 yards on 126 receptions with as many as 12 touchdowns. Last year wasn’t a bad one for him. He totaled 59 catches for 693 yards with two scores. Talking about Mecole, coach Andy Reid recently claimed, “we have a lot of confidence in what he can do.”

He’s coming off a good year. He’s got to continue to grow here over the next couple of years here. Mecole has the speed like a Tyreek had, different player, but like what Tyreek had. He gives you a nice skillset there with the speed and quickness and ability to run when the ball is in his hands. He’s a very aggressive runner when the ball is in his hands. You find ways to do that in a variety of different ways,” Reid added.

Giving his take on Mecole, Mahomes said, “I think whenever Mecole has gotten opportunities in this offense, whether it was when Tyreek had to go out or he would come in and run the routes that Tyreek ran, he would make plays happen. He made a lot of big plays in big moments, especially at the end of last season.”

So, for me, it’s for him to just continue to be himself. He doesn’t have to be Tyreek Hill; he has to be Mecole Hardman, and I think Mecole Hardman can be a great player in this offense. He’s made a Pro Bowl already and I think he can keep getting better and better,” Mahomes added as reported by NFL.com.

Talking more about the Tyreek-Mecole comparison, Mahomes said, “everybody puts out there he’s got to replace Tyreek. I think he can be his own player, a Pro Bowler, and a great player in this offense as well. I think just him continuing to evolve, play hard and practice hard, he’ll have a great season this year.”

It will be interesting to see how Mecole performs in the coming season.
