Patrick Mahomes was upset after the final whistle at Arrowhead on Sunday night. The officials flagged a brilliant Kadarius Toney touchdown, which could have given the Kansas City Chiefs a massive advantage in a crucial AFC tie.

The Buffalo Bills had just finished their bye week following their defeat against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sean McDermott wanted to focus on winning the game rather than his pep talk fiasco, which became a massive debating point before the game. It was the correct time to face the Lombardi holders, who lost to the Green Bay Packers last week.

However, hardly anyone was expecting the dramatic ending that took place after the 2-minute warning. Mahomes took a quick snap and found Travis Kelce in the middle of the field. But the tight end was surrounded by Bill’s defenders, who closed in on him. Kelce chose the next best option. Instead of running with the ball, he threw a lateral pass to Kadarius Toney.

The Chiefs wide receiver caught the ball and reached the end zone without any hurdles. As the stadium erupted into celebration, thinking that their team had finally taken the lead for the first time, a yellow flag on the ground stopped them in their tracks.

After a brief discussion, the officials hit the Chiefs with an offensive offside and dismissed the touchdown. It allowed the Bills to take over possession of the ball and the match itself. Kansas lost the game 17-20.

During the post-game handshake, Mahomes can be heard saying to Bills quarterback Josh Allen that the late offside call was the “worst f****** call I’ve ever seen. Offensive offsides—you got to be kidding, man. F****** terrible!”

Patrick Mahomes is closing in on his worst-ever season with the Chiefs

As the season moves into the business period of the year, every game is a must-win, especially for teams that are going into post-season football. The Chiefs are firmly in the mix once more and currently occupy the third seat in the AFC and are at the top of the AFC West. But the loss against the Buffalo Bills has left them in a precarious position.

They aren’t the only ones with an 8–5 record. Both the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns boast the same winning record. The Jaguars especially could have leaped over them if they had beaten the Browns last night.

As for Patrick Mahomes, 2023 may well be his worst-ever season as a Chiefs player. The 5-time Pro Bowler, compared to his Super Bowl-winning 2022 season with 41 touchdowns, only has 23 this time around. Moreover, he had thrown 12 picks all season last time around but has conceded 11 already.

Well, it would be unfair to put the blame solely on Mahomes considering the Chiefs turnover record. The Chiefs are 6th, losing the ball 22 times, and 13 of those were picks.
