Patrick Mahomes is probably a young Tom Brady, well do not jump to criticizing my take just yet, in terms of how he speaks to the media and how he speaks about his teammates. The quarterback is very calm and collected, he is not known to lose his cool or speak ill about any teammate, current or former. Mahomes has never criticized those who undermine him and call him overrated but recently he had to speak out against the blasphemy coming out of his buddy and former teammate Tyreek Hill’s mouth.
Hill got traded to the Miami Dolphins as they offered him more money, ever since the move to Florida, he has been taking a slew of subtle shots at the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. His main criticisms were that he was not used as much and all he did there was catch deep balls while he personally wanted to do more and get the ball in his hands more. While you cannot blame a team for drawing up plays that cater to the strengths of a player, Tyreek never seemed to even hint at being mad about this when he was in Kansas City. The breaking point for Mahomes seemed to be when Hill claimed that Tua Tagovailoa was a better passer than him and that he would take him over Mahomes any day.
“I’m surprised a little”: Patrick Mahomes did not see this coming from Tyreek Hill
On the final day of the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp, Mahomes was asked about his former teammate’s comments on his podcast, Mahomes had this to say about it. “I’m surprised a little (all of us are Pat, all of us are) because I felt like we love Tyreek here. I talked to him at Formula One in Miami (Miami GP), and everything seemed fine,” Patrick stated. He has not spoken to him since that point but Hill’s statements came like a stab in the back to many of the members of the Chiefs organization. He started off catching punt returns and transitioned into one of the deadliest weapons in the league, although his hard work was to credit for it, the team provided him every chance to show his worth.
Speaking on the wideout’s frustration with targets and the routes he ran, Mahomes said this, “I feel like with the coverages we were getting, defenses were really accounting for him, so we had to go other places, but when he’s a competitor like that, you want to have a chance to impact the game. I know he wanted to get the ball as much as possible so he could help us win. It wasn’t a selfish thing. We were winning games, I didn’t think he brought that to our attention. Now we move on.”
If you try to satisfy a player’s ego in the league, the overall team success will take a toll, so at times even though you know you have the most talented player on your roster, you will have to go with a different option just because that may be more suited in that situation, that is not a dig at the wideout or his capabilities but you cannot have that Antonio Brown mentality and put your personal success over the team’s accolades.
Patrick Mahomes also threw the possibility out there that since Hill just started a podcast, he was maybe doing this to get some followers and make it boom, “I’m sure it had something to do with trying to get his podcast some stuff and get it rolling,” Pat said. There were plenty of flaws in Hills’ statements, and a lot of contradictory points arose. He was disappointed at the way he was being used but at the same time, he wished to remain in KC and be compensated like a Davante Adams.
Will the Chiefs struggle without him? Struggle is too far a push, they will notice his void but the team will adapt, and make a couple of tweaks to their playbook. With new ballers such as Juju Smith Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and rookie Skyy Moore, Mahomes believes the team has immense potential.
Do Tyreek’s recent comments impact his friendship with Patrick? Not according to the QB, “I still love Tyreek, he’s a one-of-a-kind player, but as you know, in Coach Reid’s offense, it takes the whole team, this offense was rolling before I got here. This offense was rolling when I was a young Cowboys fan watching the Eagles beat up on the Cowboys. It’s an offense that’s more than one player, and that includes me,” the QB concludes.
