With the recent chatter about Patrick Mahomes chasing after Tom Brady’s legacy, it may seem kind of apparent that the Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback would consider the former legendary quarterback as his idol. However, it’s quite the opposite!
While listing the names of quarterbacks that Mahomes loved watching while growing up, he snubbed Brady off the list and instead included the names of Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Matthew Stafford, and Tony Romo. Growing up, the reigning Super Bowl MVP had been primarily a baseball fan and anyone would have thought he’d enjoyed Brady if he watched football. But turns out the legendary QB wasn’t even on his list.
Mahomes said during a press conference on Tuesday:
If there was one quarterback, I would probably say I loved watching Aaron Rodgers. I liked watching Brett Favre, I liked watching Matthew Stafford – guys that were kind of extending plays, making plays happen. I liked watching Tony Romo a ton, growing up in that East Texas area.Patrick Mahomes said
Mahomes’ preference for Romo may have been influenced by the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback’s love for him, considering the fact that Romo’s often accused of showing clear bias toward him during his commentary.
Tony Romo raves about Patrick Mahomes ahead of Super Bowl LVIII
Ahead of the Super Bowl LVIII, the former Cowboys quarterback expressed his love for Mahomes and called him a “genuine human being.” Romo has witnessed Mahomes’ growth through the years and becoming a true successor of the legendary Brady, as he retired three weeks before the 28-year-old QB was drafted by the Chiefs.
This year, Mahomes will become the youngest QB to start four Super Bowls as he prepares for his third Super Bowl ring. And by highlighting that, Romo called Mahomes a “once-in-a-generation talent” while also praising him for being a genuine human being.
However, Romo still believes Mahomes would have to face challenges on his way following the big game next weekend.
