Peyton Hillis became a real-life legend earlier this year when he saved his son and his niece from drowning. The former NFL RB decided to enjoy the windy day by taking his children to the beach.
He was accompanied by his mother and his sister-in-law. Due to a storm that happened the previous day, his son and niece were engulfed in the rip current and the former Denver Broncos RB risked his life to save them.
Recently, Hillis sat down with ‘Good Morning America‘ for an interview and revealed all the insights about the terrible incident that put him in the hospital for more than 2 weeks.
“I hear my mom screaming and so, I looked at her and she pointed out to my son, and she says, ‘Orry and Camilla are drowning,’” Peyton Hillis stated on the show. “And so, I didn’t even think, I reacted and started running into the water.”
The former NFL RB revealed the most important decision he took then was to save his 9-year-old niece over his 8-year-old son. According to Hillis, his niece was in more danger and needed to be attended to first. However, that decision completely broke him and he believes ‘it’s a miracle that somebody didn’t die’.
“I think the scariest point was when I’m swimming to my son and I have to pass by him because my niece is in more danger,” Hillis said. “I knew that I had to pass him up to get to Camille first. Because, you know, if I didn’t, then there’s no way she would’ve made it.”
Peyton Hillis experienced lung and kidney failure after the miraculous recovery
The unfortunate incident that day was saved successfully, and no one was injured between his son and his niece. Hillis too, had pulled off a miraculous recovery and was taking his son back to the beach. However, he soon passed out and started experiencing lung and kidney failure.
The former Kansas City Chiefs RB had exerted himself a lot in the process of saving his children, resulting in him needing immediate medical supervision. “To their credit, I mean, they all act like everything was normal, everything was fine, which calmed me down… I couldn’t move. I mean, I couldn’t move my body,” Peyton Hillis stated.
Hillis was immediately airlifted to Pensacola’s Baptist Hospital. The former RBs condition had worsened significantly, and he needed to be put on a ventilator for life support.
Fortunately, the 37-year-old gained consciousness after 10 days, and the whole country celebrated. Peyton Hillis became a legend in the NFL world and his story will be remembered for his bravery and valor.
