The Texas Christian University product Quentin Johnston was one of the highly touted players in the 2023 draft class. The Los Angeles Chargers eventually picked him in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft that concluded in April. During draft day, the talented wide receiver made a promise to his mom Sherry Johnston that she wouldn’t be working for too long.

After getting the call from the LA Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, Johnston teared up and gave a shout-out to his mom.“I just want to give a big shout-out to my mom,” he said during the Draft day. “She’s going to be putting her two weeks’ notice in today. She can retire. I don’t want you working another day.”

And now, Quentin Johnston has fulfilled his promise. On Thursday, his mom Sherry Johnston finally retired from her job at the VA Hospital after serving for more than two decades. During a recent Zoom interview with KWTX’s Darby Brown, Sherry opened up about her son fulfilling his draft day promise. Sherry didn’t want to retire at first, but his son ended up convincing her.

“I told him I didn’t want to retire, that I still wanted to work,” said Sherry. “He was like, ‘Mom, you’re always talking about these blessings… and now I have the opportunity to bless you, and you’re not going to let me do it!’ And I was like, yeah when you put it that way, I’ve got to let you do it.”

Quentin Johnston signed a 4-year rookie deal worth approximately $14 million. He joins star receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in the Chargers’ receiving depth chart.

The new Chargers pass catcher, Quentin Johnston, will be a massive asset to Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles-based football team. The Chargers certainly needed help in the wide receiver position and they got one of the best receivers in the draft.

Johnston, who had a massive season last year for the TCU Horned Frogs, was a projected top-10 pick in the 2023 Draft. However, during the draft day, Johnston ended up sliding before the Chargers scooped him up with their 21st overall pick.

The talented wide receiver will be a great fit with the Chargers and Herbert. His route running still needs some polishing, but Johnston is one of the best athletes when it comes to contested catching.

Johnston will try to help Justin Herbert get his first NFL playoff victory in the upcoming season. Furthermore, If he can stay healthy, the 6’3″ wideout also has a shot at winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
