“Should’ve looked him in the eye & told everything”: Rams HC Sean McVay admits handling Jared Goff trade mechanics POORLY

“Should’ve looked him in the eye & told everything”: Rams HC Sean McVay admits handling Jared Goff trade mechanics POORLY

Sean McVay and Jared Goff

The Rams had a fantastic 2021-22 season. Everything they did, all the trades they executed turned out to be masterstrokes. One major addition to their side last time around was star QB Matthew Stafford who roped in after Jared Goff was traded to the Lions.

At first, there were reports that Goff was really unhappy with the way he was traded. Although it is now all in the past and even McVay admitted that after the Super Bowl win, he got the best text from Jared, it seems like the champion coach still laments the way he handled the trade back then.

“I would never want anything to be misunderstood about my appreciation for him”: Sean McVay on Jared Goff

Sean McVay and Jared Goff

Recently, Rams head coach McVay made an appearance on Mike Silver’s podcast where he admitted that he could have, and frankly should have handled the Goff trade situation in a better way. “The one thing that hurt me is that I would never want anything to be misunderstood about my appreciation, my respect for Jared,” he said.

Was it a tough decision? Yes. Were there some things that I could’ve handled better in terms of the clarity provided for him? No doubt. So all in all, biggest thing I regret, is not being able to sit down, look Goff in the eye and be able to communicate kind of where we are, what we were going to try to do moving forward,” Sean claimed.

Sean went on to add that if he gets a chance to redo the way he communicated the trade to Goff, he would look him in the eye and tell him what is in his mind before even going to Cabo. “If I had it over again, what I would do is, before I had even gone to Cabo, when there was a possibility of, alright, if Matthew Stafford’s available, if there’s other quarterbacks available, that would be something that we would explore, you sit down with him, you look him in the eye, you tell him that instead of calling him and setting up a meeting where that was my intention when I got back from Cabo.

It is refreshing to see a head coach being so open about what he could have done better even when he is fresh of a championship. Moreover, the way Goff showed respect towards McVay and the franchise instead of escalating the matter any further should also be praised.
