The New England Patriots made a surprise draft pick, as they went after UT-Chattanooga guard Cole Strange as their 29th pick on the first day of the 2022 NFL draft. This sparked a hilarious reaction from Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay who was at an online press conference meet when the Patriots made the call.

The reaction from the Rams head coach sparked rumours, that he was laughing at Bill Belichick for drafting Cole Strange so early in the piece, given that the player was predicted to go much later in the draft. However, Sean McVay cleared the air on this issue and said that he was in fact laughing with his general manager, Les Snead.

The Super Bowl-winning head coach opined that they were very fond of Cole Strange themselves and wanted to pick him at No. 104 overall, which was the earliest the Rams could make a draft. It was probably a feeling of the Rams have had their hopes up, that they might just get a shot at drafting him when their pick came later in the piece.

McVay also said that he did not intend to cause the confusion and owned up to any misunderstandings that may have been created because of his unprecedented reaction on live media.

Sean McVay clarified saying, “I wish that it wouldn’t have gotten misunderstood. It was more of a reflection of, I was actually giving Les a hard time because when we started watching him, I think we both were in agreement, there’s no way he’d be there [at 104] because we like the player so much. “

Sean McVay continued, “If there’s anybody that has more respect for Coach Belichick and what he’s done than I do, I’d like to see them because I have tremendous respect for this profession and the players that play at this level and I would never want it to get misunderstood for Cole Strange or the Patriots organization that anything but respect for the player. That was my reaction and any misunderstanding was my fault for the way I probably communicated that.”
