The 9/11 tragedy is a very sensitive topic. Even more than two decades after the incident, some people are still shaken by the whole incident. But that tragic attack, which happened on the cruel day of September 11, 2001, became a cause for many conspiracy theories. Many people, including the former NFL player Rashard Mendenhall, who played the running back for the Steelers, have different opinions about the terrorist attack even after Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden took responsibility for the incident.

The United States government spent 10 years on the search for the Al Qaeda founder and on May 1, 2011, then US President Barack Obama announced the death of Osama Bin Laden from the White House. The people all over the country were celebrating the news of Laden’s death, but then Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall was not thrilled by it.

The former Super Bowl Champion took to social media to call out the people that were celebrating the death of Bin Laden. Furthermore, he also entertained the conspiracy theorists who claim the attack was not done by the terrorists.

“What kind of person celebrates death? It is amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side… We’ll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style,” tweeted Mendenhall, which led to him receiving a massive backlash.

Following his comments about the 9/11 attack and Osama Bin Laden, then NFL RB Rashard Mendenhall had to clarify his comments due to the massive backlash he received.

“Nothing I said was meant to stir up controversy. It was my way to generate conversation,” Mendenhall said about his comments on 9/11.“In looking at my timeline in its entirety, everything that I’ve said is with the intent of expressing a wide array of ideas and generating open and honest discussions, something I believe we as American citizens should be able to do. Most opinions will not be fully agreed upon and are not meant to be. However, I believe every opinion should be respected, or at least given some thought.”

Mendenhall played five years in total for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After that, he played for the Arizona Cardinals for one year, where he rushed for 8 touchdowns. Moreover, the talented running back retired suddenly at 26 since he didn’t want to play football anymore.
