With JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards set to enter free agency this summer, there’s bound to be some new faces in the Baltimore Ravens running back core. Several high-profile names could be up for grabs, and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes that Saquon Barkley fits the Ravens Bill perfectly.
Dobbins suffered a season-ending injury, along with undrafted free agent Keaton Mitchell. Edwards steadied the ship, along with some sprinkle from Dalvin Cook in the postseason. Now that both the Dobbins and Edwards will try their luck in free agency, the Ravens may target someone equally efficient in the offseason.
Head Coach John Harbaugh said, as per USA Today,
We’ll assess that market; we’ll talk to those guys [Dobbins and Edwards]. I have a lot of respect for and have been two outstanding players. We’ll look at the draft; we’ll look at free agency.
They are spoiled for choices. Severe top-rated backs, which include Derrick Henry, Josh Jacobs, D’Andre Swift, Tony Pollard, and, of course, Saquon Barkley, could find themselves wearing the Ravens jersey in 2024. Jeremy Fowler, during a recent sports center, mentioned the gold mine of running backs that’s available this time around.
Baltimore's typically not a big spender, especially in that position. But there are 5 or 6 really good players. The running-back market has suffered in recent years. So they could wait out and see if somebody falls down to them at the right price. Can you imagine Saquon Barkley and Lamar Jackson having the same backfield for the running game?Fowler
Football fans react to the possibility of Saquon Barkley playing alongside Lamar Jackson
Before any other franchise approaches Barkley, the New York Giants would undoubtedly have a chat with him. Now the franchise tag for $12,109,200 should be off the table because he is coming off one, and there’s a high possibility he would reject it.

If the Ravens do sign Barkley, then he will become the first back since the Colts Jonathan Taylor to sign a long-term contract. The fans are already salivating, thinking about Jackson and Barkley lining up side by side.
Even the Athletic‘s Jeff Zrebiec agrees with Fowler. He wrote,
The Ravens are going to add a big name running back this offseason. I don’t know whether it will be Derrick Henry, [Saquon Barkley], Austin Ekeler, or Josh Jacobs, but I foresee them adding a bell-cow back.
Everything will come down to money. The Ravens have little cap space and more than 25 players as unrestricted and street-free agents. But if they can manage to add Barkley or even anyone from Henry, Jacobs, or Pollard, then it would benefit them greatly.
