Rich Gannon, the former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, found all the hate campaigns against Brock Purdy irrelevant. Despite all the things that he achieved in the first two years of his start, the quarterback was subjected to several harsh words from multiple analysts and former players. The latest words came from Cam Newton, the former quarterback, who labeled Purdy as the game manager and not the game changer.
Taking a jibe at all the recent criticisms, Gannon stood by the side of Purdy. Talking to SiriusXM NFL Radio, the former Chiefs QB further noted,
It's not a skills competition, it's an NFL game--Now, all he has shown me in the last year and a half, is that this guy can play the NFL game at a high level. ... He's off to an amazing start, he's done a lot of really good things for the 49ers, took them to an NFC Championship Game a year ago and to a Super Bowl this year.
Purdy had a great regular season this year. He first ensured the postseason for his team as the No. 1 NFC conference seed holder. He also broke multiple franchise records with this team this year. The quarterback was one of the frontrunners for the Most Valuable Player Award as well.
Nonetheless, Purdy did not have a great postseason run. He was subjected to some interceptions in the two postseason games. In addition, he was also silent in the Super Bowl game for most of the part despite having a touchdown.
As Purdy lost the Championship, the quarterback would strive to better that next year. Gannon seconded this notion and added in his segment,
Let's take a deep breath. Let's give the guy a chance to mature and develop. Let's see what he can do rather than hate on the guy.
Brock Purdy thanked his teammates for their support
Throughout the season, Brock Purdy stayed humble about the achievements he made. He attributed the success to his teammates for things he achieved. Even after the loss against the Chiefs, the player seemed hopeful as he claimed that they would go for another championship drive.
We are grateful for the kind of a season we had with the great guys in the dressing room, the organization and the team. We got into the Super Bowl but failed short in the over time. Sucks! But we gave our all this season.Purdy post Super Bowl game
With the Niners having the contracts of most of the players intact, the team can easily compete for the Super Bowl in the next season. However, the loss of two Super Bowl games in the span of five years surely must be bugging the organization a lot.
