Richard Sherman is one of the most outspoken athletes that we have ever seen, on the field we all know his resume, one of the best cornerbacks to do it, and he is also one of the few players who has graduated from a reputed college such as Stanford with a degree. Sherman is smart and athletic, but he does have one flaw, his trash talking may at times get the best of him but that does not stop him from running his mouth!
In the last year or two, Richard Sherman has kind of cleaned his tone and act up a bit, he has been through some rough mental health struggles and was even arrested once but in his prime, when he came into the NFL, his confidence was unparalleled to none, Sherman knew what he could do and that he could lock up the best receivers and at the same time, he did not take criticism well especially when it came from sports analysts who had never stepped on a football field in their entire lives.
“I’m better at life than you are”: Richard Sherman belittles Skip Bayless and his professional career
If you did not already guess it, Richard Sherman had beef with Skip Bayless, the reputed sports analyst who was at the time with ESPN on their flagship show, First Take along with Stephen A. Smith. To give you some context, this was the time when Sherman was calling out the best players across the entire NFL, he had claimed that he was better than Darrelle Reevis who was at the time the best cornerback in football, Richard had also taken shots at Tom Brady and other players who were considered as bonafide superstars. Skip Bayless had criticized Sherman’s attitude and had shut his claims of being the best defensive back in the league down, he did not believe it and had stated that on national television. So what did Sherman do? He personally came on First Take and gave us what is one of the best interviews to date on air.
“Skip, whenever you refer to me, whenever you address me, address me as All-Pro Stanford graduate because those are some accomplishments you’ll never accomplish, you have never accomplished anything, you can aspire to them,” Sherman opens with a hostile tone towards Skip. The analyst probably saw this coming and to his credit, he managed to keep his cool and acknowledged his comments but at the same time, he clapped back by stating that he has accomplished much more in his field than Sherman had done in his.
This is when things begin to get interesting, Richard Sherman shows his confidence by calling himself “one of the best 22 players in the NFL” as he was chosen to the Pro Bowl that year, in addition to this, he further berates Skip by stating, “I don’t think you are the best 22 anything, in sports, media, or anything. I think you think more of yourself than you can actually prove. In my 24 years of life, I’m better at life than you.”
Sheesh, that was quite the comment, Sherman did not hold back a bit, it is amazing how Skip manages to stay calm throughout and he attempts to deflect from this personal attack by asking the corner if he actually believed that he was better than Darrelle Reevis to which Sherman responds, “I’m better than you, so I have nothing to say about him. My numbers speak for themselves.” He kind of answered the question by not answering it. Richard Sherman would have made a great lawyer.
Richard Sherman accuses Skip Bayless of being an “ignorant, pompous, and egotistical” person. He also threatens to “crush him” on national television. “I’m tired of you, I’m talking to you right now, let’s talk here right now, I’m talking about right here right now, you are not listening, you are not paying attention(to his stats and game film),” Sherman concludes. Skip Bayless claps back numerous times by asking the corner to answer his questions and quit deflecting, he also told him on his face that he does not belong in the category of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. That interview was one of the tensest ones ever. It had me on the edge of my seat watching it like it was the Super Bowl, it is a video that every NFL fan has to watch for sure!
