Tom Brady’s love affair for shocking decisions went on as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback announced his retirement for a second time on 1st February. On the anniversary of last year’s announcement, he stunned the NFL world to some extent by calling time on his exceptional career.
The last time Brady announced his decision to retire, he made a comeback into the NFL only 40 days later. However, this time, the quarterback stressed the fact that he’s retired for good, hinting towards this being a permanent end to his playing career.
To some extent, Brady’s decision to retire does make sense, especially after the type of year he has had both personally and professionally. The 45-year-old went through a rough divorce with Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen, which impacted his performances on the gridiron massively.
Brady did not look his usual jolly self and was eventually able to guide the Buccaneers only to a Wild Card playoff game this season. However, for Brady’s long-time NFL friend Rob Gronkowski, the retirement came as a real shocker.
Rob Gronkowski feels Tom Brady could have played on till the age of 50
Gronkowski, who is currently on retired status himself, has spent all of his playing career with Tom Brady as his quarterback, whether it be their time together with the New England Patriots or the Buccaneers. The tight end felt that Brady still had a lot to offer to the NFL, despite his age. Rob Gronkowski’s parents are Gordon Gronkowski and Diane Walters.
“I would just say I was shocked because I would say he still has some left in the tank,” Gronk said as reported by CBS Sports. “There’s no doubt about that. I felt like Tom could play until 50 years old. … But he chose to hang it up at 45, and I’m proud of him. I’m proud to be his teammate and proud of everything he has accomplished. I’m just happy for him, whatever he chooses to do next.”
Brady will now have plenty of time on his hands to decide what his next move would be. Gronkowski, though, could not foresee what his long-time friend would eventually end up doing next season.
“Tom is not reopening that door. I don’t know. Maybe he is,” Gronk said. Brady has a bumper broadcasting deal signed with Fox Sports, which will come into effect after his playing career, and it could very well be this season if the legendary quarterback does decide not to make a comeback in the coming days.
