Things got awkward between New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and head coach Robert Saleh at the NFL owners meeting. Reportedly, the pair got into a heated argument.
NFL Media’s Colleen Wolfe revealed it in Tuesday’s segment of the Around the NFL podcast. She revealed the occurrence of a heated exchange between Johnson and Saleh. This is what she said:
At the owners meetings, there was a very heated conversation between Woody [and] Robert Saleh. To the point where it was a little awkward.Colleen Wolfe via Around the NFL podcast
Wolfe did not reveal the reason behind the uncharacteristic moment in either of the two. But she also did not forget to mention that it wasn’t a massive argument but rather a passionate exchange.
Then again, Robert Saleh has yet to prove to Johnson that he could lead the Jets to post-season football. The last time they played in the playoffs was more than ten years ago. Johnson poached Saleh from the San Francisco 49ers, where he was the defensive coordinator. In three seasons in the Big Apple, the Saleh-led Jets have won 18 games, lost 33, finished fourth twice, and finished third last season.
A Jets insider shuts down any heated arguments between Woody Johnson and Robert Saleh
The rumor of a ‘passionate exchange’ between Jonson and Saleh has become a topic of discussion. It came after the Jets owner answered a question on how well the coach would do in the 2024 season. Johnson replied that the 45-year-old would be a better coach. The belief was the impending return of Aaron Rodgers would help Saleh coach better and win games.
Perhaps his words would come true if Aaron Rodgers didn’t pick up an early injury like last year. There’s still a question mark on Zach Wilson, for whom they can’t find a trade partner. Not only did the Jets fail to win more than seven games in a season, but the locker room was a mess. Rumors started leaking out, tarnishing how the franchise operated.
After that, witnessing a few lose their cool wouldn’t be surprising. However, Jets insider Connor Hughes reported no heated exchange between Johnson and Saleh. Instead, the 76-year-old apparently took the Jets contingent to dinner.
Hughes pointed out that, despite the scrutiny from the New York media, Robert Saleh never burst out in anger, keeping calm in the face of fiery questions. Check out his tweet below:
However, he did speak up against one reporter who asked Saleh why he never got angry despite the bad results. In reply, he asked in a stern voice if the coach should have thrown the chair.
Perhaps not, but Saleh’s 5-year tenure will end after the 2025 season. If he wants to remain the head coach of the Jets, then he must turn around the situation starting in 2024.
