Russell Wilson didn’t waste much time welcoming his new quarterback partner, Justin Fields. On Saturday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Fields from the Chicago Bears.
The Steelers had interest in the Ohio State graduate even before adding Wilson. But it received a massive boost after last year’s starter, Kenny Pickett, forced a trade to the Philadelphia Eagles. Reportedly, Pickett wasn’t thrilled to hear that the 35-year-old would play the majority of the snaps in 2024.
They had already parted ways with Mitch Trubisky, who returned to the Buffalo Bills, and Mason Rudolph, who joined the Tennessee Titans. To fill the vacancy, general manager Omar Khan went and traded for Fields. In return, the Bears will receive a conditional sixth-round pick, which could be upgraded to a fourth-round pick if the 25-year-old plays 51% of the matches in his first season at Acrisure.
After the Steelers announced Justin Fields’ trade, Wilson wrote a welcoming message on X (formerly Twitter).

Russell Wilson plans to win more Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers
Fields’ contract details are yet to be finalized, but judging by his age, the Steelers should invest more time in him. However, Pickett’s reaction to leaving proved that Wilson will be QB1, at least for the 2024 season.
However, the nine-time Pro Bowler has plans to stay longer in the Steel City. After making his deal official with the Steelers, Russell Wilson sat down with Missi Matthews of Steelers.com for an exclusive interview.
I see it as a long-term goal. I want to be part of the Pittsburgh [Steelers] community for a really long time, and I’m really excited about that. Hopefully, we can add some more championships [Super Bowl rings].Wilson said
The one-on-one talk with Matthews revealed several things. But more importantly, Wilson appeared to have taken a slight dig at the team that released him earlier this month.
I’ve got five to seven more years of ball, and I really want to be the best that I can be. Who you marry up [play for] with matters.Wilson added
It’s the same response he had in the twilight days with the Denver Broncos. He wanted to win two rings before his lucrative contract runs out at Mile High.
For me, it's about winning. Over the next two years, I want to win two rings. I want to feel the chill of that trophy again.Wilson said
On the surface, it may appear that the Pittsburgh Steelers are taking a big gamble with a completely new quarterback partnership. But with the mixture of a proven player and a duel threat QB should be beneficial in due time.
