“We’ll see another quarterback in Miami”: Ryan Fitzpatrick and Sean Payton are grim about Tua Tagovailoa’s future as a starter

The blows seem to just keep coming for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The starting QB faces an uphill task ahead of him as this season will truly test if he is worthy of being a starter in the NFL or if he will end up being just another mediocre athlete. Tua is under more pressure than ever following the acquisition of Tyreek Hill, a top wideout, and an upgraded roster to support him.

The Miami Dolphins were able to cruise past Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots in Week 1 but despite the start with a win, Tua Tagovailoa still has not convinced some of the top minds in the game that he is worthy of being a starter. Former NFL quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is one such critic who is not sure about the young quarterback’s longevity and potential.

Will Tua Tagovailoa cave under the pressure this season?

Ryan Fitzpatrick in a recent interview spoke about his replacement quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa. Despite praising some of his talents, he admits that there are a lot of limitations that will affect him negatively in the long run. Here’s what Ryan had to say, “I get how dicey every opinion around Tua is. But if you’re a top-10 quarterback, you have to have at least one trait that is absolutely special, something you can do that nobody else can. With Tua, it’s not the arm strength, it’s not the ability to run. It’s not the ability to scramble or get out of trouble. Anticipation and accuracy. Those are the things he has to be elite at. I think that he is very, very good at it.

“The problem is, he’s not going to be able to scramble around, escape the pocket, and make big plays down the field. He has to take what he has that’s elite, his accuracy. He’s limited in some of those other ways.” That is probably the only time I have heard a quarterback praise Tua’s throwing accuracy. Tua does have less to work with but at the same time, he has the necessary weapons around him, and if he builds great chemistry with them, then the Dolphins can go a long way this season.

Former New Orleans Saints HC Sean Payton is another critic of Tua who went a step further and said that the quarterback in a couple of months may not even be a starting quarterback in the league. Remember, this is the man who was offered $100 million for 5 years to coach the Dolphins. Payton made it clear, “I think at some point we’ll see (another starting quarterback) in Miami. They played well with Tua (in Week 1) but Teddy Bridgewater, who I’ve had before, he’s an outstanding player.”

Tua has clearly not had the best record and his accuracy and long throws have been criticized. To add to these woes, he is also an injury-prone quarterback. However, given that he knows that this is the do-or-die season for him, he has to come out and prove that he belongs in a starter’s role in the NFL.
