The NFL 2023 offseason is well and truly underway, with franchises making the most of it. However, the New York Giants continue to remain at crossroads with their star running back Saquon Barkley in a bid to find a solution to the complicated contractual situation.

The New York Giants franchise tagged Barkley earlier this year, but the 26-year-old wants a long-term contract offer ahead of the new season. This has created a huge rift between the player and the franchise, with Barkley not ready to budge from his demands.

Barkley felt extremely hard done by after not receiving an offer, especially after the Giants offered a whopping extension contract worth $160 million to quarterback Daniel Jones. It is still not the end of things, however, as the two parties have till the 17th of July to agree to a new deal, which is giving some hope to Barkley.

Since Barkley has not signed the contract offer, he cannot join the New York Giants during their minicamp this weekend. When asked about the chances of him rejoining the franchise, Barkley felt that the differences could be eliminated given that they still have time to work on things.

“I think they’re open to talking. I’m open to talking,” Barkley said. “I think at the end of the day, if you really break it down and look at it as a whole, there is no rush. There is still time on the table to get to July 17.”

“July 17 is not tomorrow. It’s not in a week. That is how I look at it. Maybe that is the naïve way to look at it, I could be completely wrong. But for me, that’s how I look at it. I could be completely wrong. Hopefully. I trust in the Giants that we could get something done.”

Barkley will make a total of $10.1 million in wages if he decides to sign the franchise tag offer in the coming days. According to various reports, the 26-year-old has previously rejected a contract offer from the Giants worth around $14 million per year to eke out a better offer in accordance with the current valuation of contracts going across the NFL. While things look bleak now, there’s enough time for the duo to agree in the coming days.
