“This is a WRONG move”: Shannon Sharpe does not have faith in Trey Lance as a starting Quarterback

Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance

Officially, it’s the end of an era in San Francisco. Recently, the 49ers announced in their training camp press conference that they will be moving on from veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and declared Trey Lance as the teams QB1. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the team’s decision to move on from Jimmy G and thanked him for his services.

Lance has been impressing his coaches and all of his teammates the entire off-season. Even reputed vets such as George Kittle and Mohammad Sanu commended Lance over his throwing abilities and his ability to learn and pick up fast. His professionalism and commitment to the sport added to the energy he brings to the field.

“I would do everything I possibly can to keep Jimmy G on the roster”: Shannon Sharpe on 49ers declaring Trey Lance as QB1

“Jimmy understands where we’re at, I can’t tell you how appreciative I’ve been of Jimmy and him being here. I appreciate what he did for us last year. He did a hell of a job coming into camp and winning that job and taking us to the Super Bowl(referring to Super Bowl LIV year),” 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan had claimed.

As soon as the news of Lance being declared QB1 broke, innumerable reactions started pouring in on Twitter. While some claimed that Lance is the right choice, many looked a bit skeptical with the team’s decision to declare him QB1. Recently, Shannon Sharpe also had his say on the decision.

I think its the wrong move. I haven’t seen enough,” Sharpe claimed on the Undisputed. He claimed that obviously the people who took the decision has seen more of Lance than him but went on to add that he simply wasn’t sold after what he saw from Trey Lance. “I am not saying he can’t be great but I am saying that I haven’t seen enough. I saw Patrick Mahomes in that one start, I was good.”

This is a really big risk. This team is ready to go back to the playoffs again and you basically turn it over to a guy who has 17 career college starts,” Sharpe stated, adding that although he agrees that giving Jimmy G $27 million for a backup role does not make sense but they should go back to him and try negotiating in order to get him stay as a backup if anything goes wrong.

I would do everything I possible can to keep Jimmy G on the roster, although at a reduced rate, just in case Lance falters, Jimmy gets in there,” Shannon said.
