“Not surprised at all”: Shannon Sharpe hails Steelers for drafting Kenny Pickett instead of trading for Baker Mayfield
This year’s NFL Draft was different as the top three picks were not quarterbacks, however, this does not mean that this year’s draft class does not have good quarterbacks. There are some teams in the league that are in dire need of a floor general. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the most prominent team.
Following the retirement of veteran QB Ben Roethlisberger and the untimely passing of QB Dwayne Haskins, the team needed to immediately get a quarterback. Due to the turn of tables in Cleveland in the past few weeks, a lot of analysts expected the Steelers to jump at the opportunity and grab Baker Mayfield, however, the Steelers decided to draft a QB instead.
“It’s a dream come true for this kid”: Shannon Sharpe on Steelers picking Kenny Pickett
Kenny Pickett is a resident of Pittsburgh for the past five years, so it definitely is amazing that he gets to play for his hometown team. Undisputed analyst Shannon Sharpe praised this move on part of the Steelers and stated that “From what I’ve been hearing and reading, this kid is the most ready to play, he was a three or four years starter at Pittsburgh.” In addition to that, he also emphasized the offensive lineup of the Steelers.
With weapons such as Deontay Johnson, Chase Claypool, and Najee Harris, he has a chance to turn the team around and steer it in the right direction. However, Sharpe raised concerns over the offensive line of the Steelers, “Now, the question is, I believe that the later picks solidify the offensive line, because Ben (Roethlisberger) took a beating.”
Sharpe also dismissed the concerns over Kenny Pickett having small hands by stating there are other QBs in the league such as Joe Burrow who have excelled despite having relatively smaller hands.
Talking about Baker Mayfield, Sharpe said, “They passed on Baker, which I’m not surprised as if they wanted Baker, they could have easily given them (Cleveland Browns) a fifth-round or sixth-round pick to ensure you get him, and they were not willing to do that. I think that they believe the upside of Kenny Pickett would give them more than Baker would… They believe the Kenny Pickett situation would be better than the Baker situation.”
Baker Mayfield is indeed in a rough spot now, as every team in the league has a quarterback that they are likely to stick with. Coming to Kenny Pickett, it is a dream come true indeed as there is nothing better than being able to play for your home team. With a coach like Mike Tomlin, the rookie QB will surely develop into something special and he is surrounded by an amazing squad as well.
