The New England Patriots seem to be losing their footing as the powerhouse of the AFC. In the last three years, the Patriots have had two losing seasons which has raised doubts about head coach Bill Belichick‘s success with quarterbacks not named Tom Brady.
If you are the owner of an organization that has won six Super Bowls in two decades, then the repeated failures to make it to that stage would raise some doubt about the capability of the top brass. And looks like Bill Belichick is in the hot seat in 2023.
During a press conference on Monday in Pheonix, Arizona, Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about Belichick breaking the all-time wins record of legendary Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula (328) and his future in New England. Kraft gave a kind of non-answer which led fans and media to believe there is trouble in paradise between the owner and the head coach.
“Look, I’d like him to break Don Shula’s record, but I’m not looking for any our players to get great stats,” Kraft said. “We’re about winning, and doing whatever we can to win. And that’s what our focus is now. And I — it’s very important to me that we make the playoffs, and that’s what I hope happens next year.” Robert Kraft not so subtly implied that he wants Belichick to make it to the playoffs and beyond if he wishes to break Shula’s record and keep coaching for the Patriots.

Bill Belichick can’t afford another losing season in 2023
One would think that being with the organization for almost 25 years and winning six Super Bowls might’ve earned him the benefit of the doubt, but that’s not the case. Robert Kraft made that very clear with his comments. The Patriots have started to bring in the right man for the coaching job given last year’s fiasco at the offensive coordinator position.
This led to questions about Bill Belichick being in New England until he retire. Robert Kraft’s recent comments didn’t sound like he would extend Belichick’s contract despite him being the head coach and the general manager of the franchise for more than two decades.
Some fans thought it was crass of Kraft to not give Belichick the respect he deserves and get the lifetime contract he asked for. However, Undisputed co-host Shannon Sharpe agreed with Kraft’s decision and said Belichick should not get a lifetime contract with the Patriots.
Shannon said, “Tom Brady didn’t get a lifetime contract. He won six Super Bowls. Why the hell should Bill Belichick get a lifetime contract? What has Coach Belichick done since Tom Brady got up out of town? Went to the playoff once, and they lost 47-17 in Buffalo. So, they are 25-26 when you include that playoff loss and he think he should get a lifetime contract?”
Ever since Tom Brady left the Patriots, the franchise has had a tough time making it to the postseason and registering wins. Brady never had a losing season as the quarterback for the New England Patriots, which is a record in itself. Cam Newton didn’t turn out to be the successor to Brady’s legacy in Foxboro and Mac Jones also hasn’t impressed anyone yet. As per reports, Belichick went shopping with Jones around the league and there are rumors the head coach is going to dump the former first-round pick.
Let’s see what happens in New England because the situation right now is getting too tense with all the losses amassed in the last three years.
