Three-time Super Bowl champion Shannon Sharpe has taken a sly dig at former US President Donald Trump after he took the 5th in the New York fraud deposition. The video of Trump invoking the 5th last summer was released a couple of days ago and has gone viral. He repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment when he was deposed last year as part of New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation, which involved his business practices.
Trump was accused of inflating property values and the deposition was regarding this case. New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump and his organization for fraud, stating that it misled banks and tax authorities regarding the value of its assets, which involves golf courses and skyscrapers. Trump has been accused of getting ‘illegal’ loans and tax benefits from these assets.
The ex-President was clear with his stand at the start of the deposition by clarifying all his past public statements. He also said that over the years, he was been systematically harassed by and called his situation the ‘greatest witch hunt in history’. “There has never been another president, or perhaps even another politician, who has been persecuted, harassed, and in every other way, unfairly treated like President Donald J. Trump,” he said. “This is the greatest witch hunt in the history of our country.”
He then took the Fifth before saying that anyone not using the Fifth Amendment who is in his situation will be a fool. He further added that whatever he’s doing is within the constitution and hence he has every right to do it. “Anyone in my position not taking the Fifth Amendment would be a fool, an absolute fool,” he said.
NFL analyst and former star Shannon Sharpe took a dig at this by saying that he believed innocent people didn’t take the Fifth. Sharpe implied that Trump is guilty and, to save face, he took the Fifth. “Thought innocent ppl didn’t take the 5th?” Sharpe tweeted.
Twitter reacts to Shannon Sharpe’s dig at Donald Trump
Sharpe’s reaction to Trump taking the Fifth got a mixed reaction from fans on social media. While some agreed with Sharpe, many said that Trump was within his rights to invoke the Fifth. People also slammed Sharpe for supporting President Joe Biden.
Trump’s pending lawsuit could lead to civil penalties against the company if the Democratic attorney general prevails. As of now, Letitia James wants $250 million and a ban on Trump from doing business in New York.
