Being a quarterback in the NFL is a herculean task. Every aspect has to be perfect for a player who wants to be a quarterback in the NFL. The arm strength, size, weight, accuracy, and football IQ need to be the best of the prospect.

Quarterbacks are judged on the very minute details as well. Last year, Pittsburgh Steelers signal-caller Kenny Pickett was ridiculed for his small hand size. And now, in the 2023 NFL Combine, Alabama’s signal-caller Bryce Young has been subjected to the same ridicule for his same height and weight.

Bryce Young was listed by Alabama to be 6 foot and 194 pounds. It is common for colleges to add a little juice to players and that’s the reason why players’ measurements are taken during the draft. One scout revealed to ESPN’s draft analyst Todd McShay that he had pegged Young at 5-foot-10 and a half and 194 pounds.

Fans on social media and even analysts started to see Bryce Young‘s small size as a deficiency that will make teams skip on him during the draft. There have been only about 11 quarterbacks that are 6 feet or less since the merger of the NFL and AFL. These quarterbacks include Super Bowl LXIV champion Drew Brees, and former first-overall picks Michael Vick and Kyler Murray. These are the only noteworthy quarterbacks from this sample size, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that Bryce Young will join this group.

With all the negative comments following in, veteran TV personality and co-host of UNDISPUTED, Skip Bayless, came forward and showed his support for the 2021 Heisman winner. Skip wrote on Twitter, “I am just fine with Bryce Young measuring 5-10 1/8 and weighing 204 pounds. HE’S THE BEST OF THESE QBS AND HE’S GOING TO BE A STAR. The arm, the accuracy, the leadership, the clutch guts. I like C.J. Stroud but I love Bryce Young.”

Bryce Young has all the qualities of a franchise quarterback capable of winning the Super Bowl. Prior to announcing that he will forgo his senior year at Alabama and enter the draft, the 21-year-old played 34 games for the Tide. He had a 23-4 record with a 65.8 completion percentage and threw for 8,356 yards, 80 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. These stats are definitely the marking of an elite quarterback.

While no one is doubting Young’s ability as a leader, his weight does raise some eyebrows. Even though Kyler Murray is just 5-foot-10, he weighs in at 207 pounds, which is way above the recommended for someone of his height. Young, on the other hand, weighs 194 pounds. NFL scouts are worried about his ability to break tackles and extend play out of the pocket because passer rushers the size of a mountain who weighs more than 230 pounds will be running full speed at him to pancake him to the ground.

Teams will be wary of drafting Bryce Young since he is at high risk for injury given his weight. He doesn’t have enough body armor or mass to absorb the hits laid on him by defensive linemen. It’ll be interesting to see which teams will line up to draft Alabama’s signal-caller now that his height and weight have become a huge question mark on his stellar resume.
