Super Bowl LVII saw the Kansas City Chiefs win the game against NFC champions Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in a close last-minute thriller. The game was interesting, to say the least, because it ended on a very controversial note which caused quite a stir on social media and around the league.
During the fourth quarter of the game with less than 2 minutes left in regulation, the Chiefs were on third down and at the Eagles 15-yard line. Patrick Mahomes overthrew a pass intended for JuJu Smith-Schuster and it was an incompletion but flag was thrown on the play. Eagles cornerback James Bradberry was given a holding penalty for tugging JuJu’s jersey. This hold barely lasted more than 10 seconds and Bradberry in no way blocked or turned the Chiefs receiver to earn the flag. This penalty gave Kansas City a lifeline with new sets of down and the clock kept on draining. The Eagles were handed the ball at four seconds which didn’t allow them enough time for a comeback.
Fans on social media were of the opinion that the league favors Mahomes and the Chiefs and thatthe reason why the flag wss thrown and the same exact thing happened in the AFC championship game as well. Still, James Bradberry owned up to his hold and said that the refs weren’t at fault because he did tug at the jersey. At the game, Smith-Schuster took to Twitter and trolled Bradberry for his holding penalty in a Valentine Day’s meme. JuJu’s meme wasn’t taken lightly by fans and players alike and he was thrashed on socail media for his insensitive and immature behavior.
Skip Bayless condemns JuJu Smith-Schuster’s tweet
UNDISPUTED hosts Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless discussed JuJu’s mocking of the Bradberry on their show. While the 3x Super Bowl winning tight end felt that Smith-Schuster had every right to gloat because he won the Lombardi Trophy, Skip didn’t agree with him at all. “I don’t think JuJu should be laughing at all,” Skip said. “He’s gloating about a play that was a terrible call to me. That’s what offends me the most about it.”
Shannon argued that everyone is making a huge deal out of the call because it happened in the final minutes of the fourth quarter and not before. But Skip countered by saying that the call wasn’t a game changing call it was a game deciding call. “It offends me that JuJu would go out of the way to mock James Bradberry on a call that I did not think should’ve been made in the first quarter or the fourth quarter,” Skip added.
Skip went on to say that it didn’t appear as though Bradberry was trying to turn JuJu Smith-Schuster or had a handful of his jersey in his hands which was why the call seemed unnecessary to him. Everyone who saw the game on their mobile devices or on TV would definitely agree with Skip but maybe there was a missing angle that wasn’t streamed and the refs had a better view of the play which caused them to draw the flag.
Still, it was a tough decision which sealed the fate of the game. Fans are starting a campaign to protest the bad officiating and are requesting the league to ensure proper calls are made by the refs. And JuJu shouldn’t have rubbed salt to the wounds of Bradberry who showed accepted his mistake like a true man and showed sportsmanship unlike the Chiefs’ wideout.
