“Everyone is still clinging on to what he used to be,” Skip Bayless does not see Julio Jones as a difference-maker for the Philadelphia Eagles

Undisputed on FS1's Skip Bayless does not believe the addition of Julio Jones would make the Philadelphia Eagles a significantly better team.

The Philadelphia Eagles already had a solid depth chart with A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith; now the team has made yet another valuable addition in the form of Julio Jones. This sent a wave of optimism down the spines of Philly fans who believe their team now has the best offense in the league, as everyone knows what Julio is capable of.

Jones in Atlanta was a nightmare for defenses to cover as he has the speed, excellent route-running, and stellar IQ to beat cornerbacks even if he had double coverage. While the addition of Julio Jones is being celebrated by Eagles fans, analyst Skip Bayless of Undisputed is looking at this situation from a more practical perspective and does not believe that the addition of the former Falcons wideout would make a significant difference for the team’s offense.

Skip said, “Maybe this is me trying to speak this out of existence; I believe you (Keyshawn Johnson) and they (Philadelphia fans) are living in the past. I think you are still clinging on to what Julio used to be.”

Skip goes on to give Julio his flowers by addressing his time in Atlanta. Jones played for a decade on the Falcons, and this was his prime; he dominated year after year and was instrumental in leading the team to Super Bowl LI. However, that game went down as one of the greatest in history, but not in the favor of the Falcons.

Skip goes on to add, “He was the best; he was dominating in those days, and I think even Julio in his heart of hearts knows he is probably not that guy, but he’s going to say the right thing, which is ‘I came here to dominate’ because he’s a proud man. This is his 4th team in 4 years, so clearly, I don’t condemn him for this; he wants a ring, and he thought he could go get one with Tom Brady last year.”

Skip Bayless believes Julio Jones is way past his prime

Unfortunately, Jones was not of much help to Brady and the Bucs in his final season, as he was riddled with injuries. No athlete would ever come out and state publicly that they are no longer as good as they used to be, as that would be bad for their confidence and would also push their stock down.

Furthermore, Skip believes Julio knows that he is a fraction of what he used to be but he would not come out and say it because his ego would not let him state that publicly. He further added, “He didn’t look like Julio Jones the whole year (2022)…I never saw Julio last year…I’m just not quite sure if he’ll ever be that guy to have that impact.”

Skip Bayless is right on many fronts. Julio’s hamstring had been his Achilles heel in the last season, as he could not play a lot due to it. Even when he did play, it was just a shadow of the Julio Jones that fans were used to witnessing.

The wideout position is hard to play when you consider the fact that he is 34 years of age and has been unable to find his stride in the last 4 years. One cannot expect Julio to have a drastic impact on the offense of a team. This does not mean that Julio will have no impact at all; he is a veteran, one who has been at the top of his game for nearly a decade, and he has also been to the Super Bowl.

As an experienced vet, he can be a leader in the locker room and help the receivers improve further. Of course, he will be a secondary target out there for Jalen Hurts, and despite all the aforementioned factors, no defense would be brave enough to leave Julio Jones open.
